Question

DIY mains power supply

I have a small project (a UV light box) which I power from a 5S A123, but I would like to convert it to mains power. Can someone point me to a simple DIY circuit for a mains-powered psu with a fixed output of 18v or so and a 1A capability, please?

The wall-wart 5v supplies for phones and tablets don't seem to use a transformer -- is there a DIY device that can be used to safely drop the voltage from mains 230v to what I need without a bulky transformer?
