Christmas Present help!

So my boyfriend owns a BMW z4 m and I thought it would be a nice idea to get him his very first RC car for Christmas. I want to get him a RC z4 m... I've been searching online for hours and its driving me crazy, bc so much goes into this..

Anyways, I saw that this place had an ok price:
but it says that it requires:
Radio: 2-channel with one steering servo
Battery: 6 flat pack with standard connector
Charger: AC/DC Timed or Peak for 6-cell battery

Are these easy to get? Or expensive?

Should I just go for this one: Which is already ready to ride, but it cost $200 more..

I'm confused.. Please help!

He's an engineer and loves to put things together so that part won't be an issue if I have to buy separate pieces.

I would suggest these parts to complete it. The kit is fun to assemble, so I would go that way if he's even slightly mechanically inclined.

if you think this will be his only car:
if you think he might get lots more:

I've used both, and both work great. The second one will store settings for multiple cars so you don't need a radio for each car, just additional receivers (~$6 each).

The second one will give more run time, both will need a plug adapter or a different plug soldered on to work with the car. The chassis of the car will also need a bit of trimming to fit the packs, 5 minutes with a dremel tool is what it took mine. Shouldn't be an issue if he likes tinkering. There are more direct fit solutions, but they tend to cost quite a bit more.

Even if you get him the RTR version it still needs the charger and battery pack, so those don't really factor into the cost decision between kit and RTR.

I have a couple of the TT01 that my young girls run.. Not that this is a car for a couple of 6 and 7 year olds, but they are built well and easy to get parts for. You can do much better than ordering from Tamiya directly as that price is way too high (list) for a cheap radio and servo... Phils hobby s a great place to do business with and what wparsons added for the kit will suit you fine.. I also have both those radio's but for couple more dollars the GT3 is a much better way to go.. One thing note.. that model has been discontinued by tamiya a while ago so what ever you get is old stock.. thats not a bad thing as the TT01 chassis is very common and parts are easy to come by.. but that Tamiya price is out of line.. get the kit, have your boyfriend enjoy the build and install the electronics.. He will understand the car better and really enjoy it more.. By the way.. One of my daughters cars is the Z4...The car is easily 5-6 years old and runs like new..

Thanks so much for all the help! Definitely going with the kit from Phil's for now...

What about going a step further and buying all the parts separately, is that just to complicated? Like And then of course the other parts (no idea which, lol).

Buying the chassis parts and body separately will almost certainly make it way more expensive. The cost of a kit is well below the cost of the individual parts.

Yep, and Tamiya makes a great "mini" kit of both the original Mini and the new ones.
