I have seen C/L Combat flown with open exhaust .36s and .15s, and a few hundred feet away, you couldn't hear the models at all, meanwhile, over at the neighboring R/C field, you could hear the models four times as far out. Why?
The sound was higher in the air so the background clutter (trees, etc.) didn't dampen it out as much even though the R/C guys had mufflers.
