Returning RC'er- 4 Stroke question


Hello all, I've been out of flying for 23 years, decided to get back into it. Bought a used Hobbico 60 Trainer, did two flying sessions, one more and I'm on my own! I'm already planning my next non-trainer aircraft which will be powered by a 4 stroke. If my memory serves me right, either SAITO or OS would be the way to go. Which one do most prefer or does it really matter? My other question is the model I like takes a .91-1.0 4 stroke. Being new again, I don't really want the big power of a 1.0, eventhough I realize I could start off not using full power until I adjust. Would it be OK to power the plane with either the SAITO .91 or OS 95? These two motors would be at the low end and middle of the suggested power for the plane. Glad I'm here and thanks in advance!

If the manual says a 91 four stroke then by all means why not?
You will get every opinion in the book on who makes the best engine you know, its a Ford vs Chevy thing. I have had good luck with most except Magnum, but then again my Magnum 52 FS after being replaced under warranty is a good engine.
I think I prefer Saito engines somewhat. I have 4 saitos, 40,45,50,62 and they are all stellar.

The Saito will fly either just fine.

Glow engines sold privately, are far cheaper than today's retail hobbyshop price tag.

That being said, a buddy of mine owns Brucercengines.com, give him a shot.
I fly a Funtana 90(60 size two stroke rating) with a Thunder Tiger 91 four stroke and it is excellent.

You want power, use YS. If you want dependability and ease of setting up and using, try Enya, OS, or saito.

YS tend to be fuel hogs but you don't get power for nothing.

Private seller, usually used engines, sometimes new. Bruce has some new engines listed.

I have to say that I have 1/2 dozen Magnums of different sizes, all 4 stroke and all dependable as an anvil. You can't do wrong getting your feet wet with one. I have three Saito's too, all very nice engines. My brother has 2 YS's, both are gas guzzlers like mentioned and they are constantly needing adjustment.

YS engines make Mongo power but they can be finicky.

Everyone has there opinions, if you want hassle free engine go with Saito.

I have both Saito and OS and my Saitos needed a little running in before getting them fully tuned and fully reliable. My OS 4 strokes were tuned after first tank and have not been touched since. Both have been run for years now.
Can't go wrong with either brand.

Four strokes, gotta love em! I have had O.S., Magnum, Saito, YS., and I am sure others I can't reacall. If your only option is O.S. or Saito, flip a coin, pick the pretty one, or the one that you can get your hands on faster. You will love both. The power is about the same and they both are well built motors. The Magnums are nice motors, cheaper $$$ but not as much power per CC as the first two. I liked all of my Magnum 4stroke, but hated my Mag. 2 strokes. YS is the BIG $$$$, but the big power too. They can be a bit touchy to tune, and sometimes do not stay in tune. But mine did not give me many problems. I am flying 2 planes with Saito 2.20 four strokes now, and they are very nice, easy to deal with motors. Good luck with your search, and follow the Mfgs break in rules. That should give you many trouble free flights.
