Mini SEMFF WWII Fighters for Indoor Streamer Combat with Plans and Video

With the sucess of the SEMFF WWII Combat Warbirds, and that some folks were looking for more options for indoor streamer combat, I thought I would couple that with the positive results of reducing the StingRay by 75% resulting in the MIni StingRay. So why not try it with the SEMFF WWII Combat Warbirds.

This series is dedicated to use of the 18-11 10g HXT or Turnigy 2000kv motor, 6A esc, and 5g servos. This allows the use of a 300 mAh 2s battery for a very lightweight package just under the 3.3 oz AUW. Recommended propeller is the GWS 7x3.5. This provides ample power for indoor use and at full speed is near the limit for controlability for these old eyes and reflexes.

If you would like more power, I can recommend a Park 250 (2200 Kv) either by E-flite or Turnigy Easy Match along with a 10A esc and the same 7x3.5 prop. Current demands just a little larger battery at 370-460 mAh 2s. Another small powerhouse is the 22-11 1700 Kv 16g motor. Thats around the same weight as the Park 250, but provides even more performance on a small 3s battery. This keeps the models right at 4 oz.

The mini nature only has to do with the size of these models. Any of these setups provides eye popping performance that can exceed most pilots capabilities. Use throttle with caution. That said their lightweight characteristic endows them with good slow flight manners.

As planes and plans are released, they will also be available at Ken's CAD Models for purchase. PLF styles will be the primary consideration here.

Grumman F4F Wildcat

Just finished the F4F Wildcat this week. Hoping to get the maiden flight in today if it warms up some.

One of the great characteristics of this plane that drove me to it as a first choice in design was its mid wing placement. It just makes for a more natural look in a PLF stlye. Also the many color schemes out there as well. I chose a very simple one.

Specifications;
Wingspan - 22"
Wing Area - 84.38 sq. in.
Length - 16.375"
Motor - HXT 18-11 2000Kv 10g
ESC - Turnigy Plush 6A
Servos - HXT 500 (5g) - 2
Propeller - GWS 7x3.5
Battery - Turnigy Nano-Tech 300 mAh 2s
Receiver - HK Spektrum compatible 4 channel
AUW - 3.2 oz.

The motor leads are soldered directly to the esc. Also trimmed the esc battery lead to half its length. This shaved 2g off the weight, not including bullet connectors if I had them. Makes for a very sanitary installation.

Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero

Specifications
Wingspan - 21.75"
Wing Area - 84.3 sq. in.
Length - 17.375"
Motor - HXT 18-11 2000Kv 10g
ESC - Turnigy Plush 6A
Servos - HXT 500 (5g) - 2
Propeller - GWS 7x3.5
Battery - Turnigy Nano-Tech 300 mAh 2s
Receiver - HK Spektrum compatible 4 channel
AUW - 3.3 oz.

18-NOV-2012 - Got the Zero scratched out this weekend. Need to work out the paint scheme and panel lines now.

26-NOV-2012 - Readied for maiden flight. Will introduce both of these birds to the indoor folks tomorrow.

27-NOV-2012 - The Zero performed very well indoors and seemed to have a faster roll rate than the Wildcat. Both planes were well received and was able to pass along a few preliminary kits. All smiles and good feelings here.

I use those motors in a micro quad and on one of my smaller pusher deltas , they work very nicely on 3 cell using a 5x3 prop.

Looking forward to seeing some micro warbirds

That 1811- 2000 Turnigy was also a very popular motor upgrade for the Cox/Gravity Micro Warbirds.

SG Talon... Super Genius.
Sea Fury next. That one has always been my favorite for combat.

Awwww m8 that's the perfect size and it flew v nicely got to make one of these

Its a good idea to either epoxy or wrap the wires to the mount, the windings can be pretty bad on these little motors because they're so small.

good for around 8oz of thrust on 3 cell

Nice flying and GREAT job by the photographer! She did an amazing job of keeping that quick maneuvering plane in frame.

I have some electronics from an Ember laying around, Do you have any recommendations or can you design an indoor mini war bird, that would take that equipment? I am thinking a WW I biplane since the motor is from an Ember, but a WWII bird would be fun.

Yes, thats already simmering on the backburner. Let me get the plans out for the WIldcat first. An Ultra Micro Wildcat, based on the Parkzone gear. Preferably the Champ gear. Just remembered, its gonna have to be Sukhoi gear or the like.
