Ron Paul didn't do better in the primaries because he would not have been as good as Romney in the practice of wealth redistribution.
An example - most of the modern, long-lasting, undeclared wars are an efficient means to make large corporations wealthy (support logistics, weapon manufacturers, etc.) by funding that ultimately comes from the taxpayer in the form of taxes. SOP for large government operations. Taking money from one person to give to another is redistributing the wealth.
Most Republicans and Democrats support wealth redistribution, only the target recipient is different. Paul was a threat to this and to other exorbitant government programs.
