u816a review/unboxing

Got the u816a by UDIR/C in just a few days ago. This is what I would consider to be my first toy grade quadcopter and I have to be honest I am fairly impressed with how well it flies!

I picked it up from tmart.com

And here's a direct link to the quad:

So here's a few video's of information:

UDI U816A UFO Quadcopter Unboxing & Review (10 min 52 sec)

UDI U816A Quadcopter Flight Video (2 min 19 sec)

So here's some pro's and con's real quick

-Offers a protective shroud which protects the props. motors etc
-Plastic Tx, but still over all a very nice feel
-Tx is very well laid out and easy to use
-All buttons on Tx have function
-Auto flip button as well as auto flip with control of direction
-Led on front of canopy for looks/orientation
-Has low rate and high rate mode
-Led is controllable by button on Tx
-Secondary canopy with no shroud
-Spare props
-Standard batteries used by most of the clones/ladybird
-many interchangable parts with other micro quads

-Shroud is made of foam, it will protect but will also break over time or even on a really hard crash
-Not as smooth/precise as a higher end quad like the lady bird
-secondary canopy doesn't have a led
-Doesn't fly near as well with shroud in the wind (to be expected)
-Shroud weight does effect battery life

Overall it's a really enjoyable flyer and I found myself quickly whipping it around my house without any issues. It moves really well and as long as you are comfortable with any quad you will quickly feel comfortable with how it flies and the shrouds made me that much more comfortable pushing it to it's limits in very confined spaces.

Yeah that was the one thing I was really wanting to do. I ordered a scale a little over a month ago from banggood, and it came in last week and was broke. The actual LCD never would show any info. I hated it because I planned on using it for this. Anyway that's not a negative statement against banggood as they were nice and apologetic and refunded the amount. I'm hoping to go to Harbor Freight this weekend and pick one up. Then I can finally get some weights on different things.

Do you think the bumper/shroud is strong enough... choosing (black) Styrofoam IMHO is good for the weight but bad for durability
I want to use it to teach my daughter orentation without breaking everything in the room

The bumber is very easy to break. One easy solution to repair it, I use hot glue, works pretty well and I feel the bumber gets tougher and tougher with all the hot glue on it ;0)

Haha. Yeah the bumper isn't going to last too many rough crashes. I was thinking if you apply something light that would give it extra strength like maybe coating with minwax or something.

Do you know if the protective shroud will fit on the LB or the V939.

Will check in the morning on my ladybird and report back. Sorry for being so slow on the flight video. Weather has been terrible.

Just got my Ladybird props for my U816 (not the U816a). Whoever recommended them was right. They seem to stay on easier but also make the quad much more docile. Before, mode 1 and mode 2 felt like 40% and 60% on the V929. Now it feels like it starts in the V929's 20% mode and mode 2 is like 40%. I was kinda getting used to the U816‘s native blades though. Made it more challnging but it's nice to have a choice. This makes me want to try the GWS props on my V929. A little bit of plastic makes a big difference.

I imagine the big prop protector of the U816a mixed with the Ladybird props would make a pretty house friendly quad.

Sorry for taking all day to get back on this. I assumed it would but wanted to make sure. So just to confirm yes the shroud canopy will fit the ladybird perfectly. Pic of my ladybird with canopy on below. (that's the u816a to the right)

Hey thanks for the test! that's a good new, because I'm planning to get the QR LB or (2) V939, so my 5 years boy could have one ;O)

can you measure the distance from motor pin to motor pin (12.3 cm / 4.84 inch) on your bird
I have the Idea that my DSM2 ladybird (with the above distance) is smaller than the supplied photo

If you plan to use the DSM2 board on a UDI, you should use the original QR LB frame and the UDI motorarms. This will (should) work.
The DSM2 board, original LB board (and the v9393) have another orientation than the UDI one

It's the exact same, because actually that is one of my dsm2 ladybirds. just used it since it has stock canopy whereas my original lb has some lights taped to the canopy and didn't want to bother with pulling the canopy off.
