SF Pilot Schooner "Gracie S" -- HAMMS Plans

Another nice one from the HAMMS collection, Gracie S.

Putting your pilot aboard an inbound ship was competitive, so your boat had to be fast but sea worthy... that's what pilot schooners were all about.

I was always attracted to "Gracie S" (later known as "Wanderer"), from when I first saw these HAMMS plans. I just recently bothered to look her up- quite a back story, and with a tenuous connection to one of the best sailing ponds anywhere, Spreckels Lake.

The Wanderer (coincidentally the name of my model Pacemaker and my Dad's 32ft Pacemaker) was a two masted schooner rigged yacht that secretly brought slaves to America after slavery was outlawed. Known as the last slave ship in America-Also the name of the boat in the movie Cap't Ron.

I found this out when researching the Wanderer Whaler ( a 3 masted bark) in Mystic Seaport's library for a scratch built static model in 1967.

All different Wanderers, all interesting boats. The Gracie S (later Wanderer) was built in SF, never left the Pacific.

One owner was sugar baron Claus Spreckels (yes, that Spreckels!). Another was actor Sterling Hayden, who, among other roles, was Brig Genl. Jack D. Ripper in Strangelove.
