P-3 Orion Build (1/14th Scale - 84" Wingspan)

This thread will follow the progress of my lifelong modeling project, the P-3 Orion. Untill now the only way to build the aircraft was to scratchbuild it. Although I am a good modeler who has had experiences in boats, helicopters, and trains I have never had the "skills" to do a project of this kind......... Until now. Thanks to Pat Tritle for drawing the plans and Charlie Mazano for cutting the "short kit", this is all possible now. It will have separately controlled electric motors along with a working bomb bay and scale navigation lights. I figure the build will take about 2 years to complete as this IS a prototype build. Any thoughts or suggestions are WELCOMED!!!

Thanks,

Hi Chief
Signing on for the build. You probably have as much scale documentation as I do but if you have any questions I will be happy to try and help. 84" will be awsome but a little larger than I prefer. I may try to get a digital DXF file and rescale to 1/2 size. I have a laser cutter here so that part is no problem.

Subscribed! I built Pat's DC-6B last summer and another four-engine beast at 80'' is very tempting

I have Pat's plans and the short kit from Charlie also. Planning on it being the winter project. Contemplating making it one of the AEW&C birds with the rotodome on top.

Hope to get started soon.

Jax, FL. Was on a RAF trip to there back in '87 when I met my Spousal Unit. We had a bunch of Nimrod ASW planes and crews there, flying sub-ex's off Andros Island.

P3 - good choice for a prototype, should fly great. They were an impressive aircraft, though I always thought the Canadian version had the best seating and galley of the lot The Nimrod was refered to by its crews, not that affectionately, as an 'ergonomic slum', BTW. It also lacked props and pretty much any sort of character, but that's immaterial now.

Good luck with this big bird.

So for Pat, an 80" WS plane will probably weight all of 2 lbs?

Plans ordered from Pat

Hey guys I just ordered the plans from Pat and I was wondering what the short kit would cost from Manzano. I too have always wanted to build a flying model of the P-3 as I have seen them flying around Jacksonville all of my life, most of which was growing up on the westside.

The cost of the short kit I got from Charlie and Vicki at Manzano was about $195 plus some shipping.
