Warbirdkits.com Grumman XF5F Skyrocket

Tom at Warbirdkits graciously sent me another of his latest short kit designs. A 42" Grumman XF5F Skyrocket. Intended for two larger CD ROM motors and a 3s Pack. As soon as I get Paul Kohlmanns B-25 off the bench, I'll start on this. Meanwhile, I'll do my regular R&D pre-build(day dreaming making funny engine noises) It will accept Eflite .10 size main retracts. And Tom asked me to develop a functional rudder(s)/tailwheel system.

I'm really looking forward to this. I knew Tom had it on the bench for a while, and was happy when the box arrived. I have only built one of the F5F's. This was a scratch build from, IIRC RCM plans, with .15 size engines. Because of the small props, it was not very friendly on take offs. I ended up removing the LG and handlaunching. But, the advent of "E" power allows large props on a light system. Problems of I.C. are gone.

Plastic cowls, simulated radial, nose piece, clear canopy and more, all from the artful workshop of Keith "Sparky" Sparks. Lazer ctting from Vicky and Charley Bice of Manzano Laser works. The builder supplies sheeting and any strip wood required. Plus motors, hardware, etc. This is a short kit.

I'm favoring the pre-war type scheme with yellow wings and alum fuselage. I'll be back soon with the start, and LOT'S of construction pics!

Interesting looking plane.

Do you think there is enough room in the nacelles for retracts?

If I'm not mistaken, the nacelles are longer on the bottom for the real retracts

Yes, Charles. Check first paragraph. Eflite .10 or the HK equivalent. Or what ever your skills allow. The Nacelles are huge. Cowling dia is just under 4.5".

Good luck with it! The F5F is a superb looking plane--here is Don Srull's stick and tissue version for electric ff later converted to rc.

Hi Pat! I remember Dons F5F. IIRC, I had the plans at one time, back in the 80's.

I built up a slightly larger version (60" wing) of this plane a couple months ago. Wonderful flyer and cool looking in the sky. Mine uses a pair of Hacker A30's and 4S for power.

Thanks Pat

My wife does those up for me on a Roland Stika (vinyl) cutter. I showed her how to use the thing and she just ran with it. Now she's gotten quite good with it...I'm very lucky.

When I was researching a scheme for the F5F, none of the military markings looked very good (at least to me). I like the Blackhawks scheme, even if it's not really scale. The bright yellow stripe makes the plane easy to see in the distance too.
