F-22 30mm

This is the F-22 I started last January, I know, I'm really slow. This is the thread I first posted about it in. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...5#post23056593
It was inspired by his work. It has evolved to something so different, I decided to do my own thread. It has a 12.1 inch wing span, and is built for the Great Planes F-86 fans. So far the lower half, and wing sections are 5 grams total. The Cad file has changed quite abit since this one, I'll update the picture when I have time.

Thanks, I could have carved out many by hand in the time it took for me to draw it.

I really messed up the top half tonight. Was getting rushed to much. The part is slightly taller than the 1.5 inch foam I had. I used Supper 77 spray to attach a piece on top. I didn't wait for it to dry, and it melted some of the foam behind the canopy cutout. Right after it finished milling I was called away, and I quickly cut it loose from the table. The foam broke free rather suddenly, and I tore the tabs out of the fuselage, and tore the nose off. I have some more patch work to do.

Top came out at 5.8 grams, but will be lighter after I sand the fuzz off. Good news is that it fit nicely in the lower half.

Didn't feel like cheating with all the time spent drawing it.
Deciding on what to make the tailerons from, thinking the foam may be to thin. Maybe balsa, or fiberglass. Did a little patch work. Also considering how to finish the foam, thought about fiberglass, tissue, polycrylic, or just paint

1mm depron will work for the vertical staberlizers and maybe the tailerons, might need to stiffen them with a cf rod. I use polycrlic mixed with a little bit of micro balloons on my nose cones and canopys to stiffin them up and keep the tip of the nose from breakig off.

If you need some 1mm depron let me know i have a few more large sheets of the stuff

Thanks, I still have a sheet of Depron. Looks like it is a little stiffer than the XPS foam.

What r u thinking the final weight of the airframe gonna be and when its RTF ?

I think around 20 grams for the airframe, 16.2 grams for the two fans, about 3 grams for servo's, and 10 grams for esc's, Not sure about the lipo, and reciever, I think 50 to 60 grams should be doable for them. So about 100 to 110 grams total. Might be able to get a little under that, but not much.

O nice it should fly fine at that weight and having 2 of those 30mm edf, are u gonna use 3s?

Im building another F22 but mine is a 15in WS and a pusher and im aiming at a 60gr RTF with 180mah 2s lipo so far it weighs 45 gr with all the electronics (not including battery) and all i have left to do is add the vertical stabilizers and canopy then its off to paint!!!

I see that some are running F-86 fans on 3 cells. I don't know how long they would last on 3s, so will probably use 2 cells at first. I have some Bluebird 303 servo's I'll probably use, unless I find something better. That will add a couple grams, but save some money.
I'm looking at the XP7A esc's for it, but most stores are out of stock.

The two fans should total around 18g.

Great job on the model so far Rob! You could even use one fan and split the air out the back to save more weight. It would still scoot along.

Thanks.
Maybe my scale is broken. I'm getting 8.1 grams per fan with motor, on my other scale. I was thinking about fitting one fan. It would have to be scaled up a little, or the fuselage fattened to make room. That would make fitting servo's, and the esc's much easier.

I glued the wings on today.

Cut the canopy. Can finish the repair behind the canopy now that I know where the edge is. Thinking of fiberglassing it. I'll have to decide on what to use. Thinking epoxy, or a mix of white glue, gorilla glue, and water.
it glides nicely, and tail heavy as is. So think i'll be ok on the balance when its done.

Here is a short video of cutting the fuselage on the mill.
Worked on the tail. Need to figure out how I'm going to hinge it.
