Indoor Micro Wing.

This is my first post on this Forum and also my first true flying wing.
About a year ago I started looking into flying wings. I loved how they didn't need tail planes or fins to fly, and thus they are very efficient. Then for about a year I watched this forum and loved seeing new designs of wings, fly and work. I then thought about making my own.

About a month a ago I decided to bite the bullet and make my own.
First I cut a 2.5mm depron sheet into the shape of a flying wing This wing had a wing span of 240mm and a cord of 35mm (root) and 8mm (tip).
I used this to prove to me that I could make a wing stable in cross winds and tip stalls.

Then I decided to make a larger one for my ar6400 board. This will have a span of 400mm with a cord of 140mm (root) and 70mm (tip)
Before I attempt to make this wing out of valuable depron foam I decided to throw together a full size paper and card model to test the building technique and to see if it flys.

So far I have made this prototype and (to my surprise) it flew!

Over the next 2 weeks (i hope) I will be sharing the build of my foam RC version.

Thanks for reading Michael

Welcome Mike,good stuff!
If you ask nicely I'm sure some of the more savvy guys on here will point you towards a suitable airfoil etc.Did you build any twist(washout)in?
Regards Stuart

No twist yet!
Theres is some washout built in too the wing
As for the airfoil, I used the EH 3.0, 12. It seems to work well

Are you going to retain some sort of spar in the depron version?Maybe a double layer of it,placed vertically at the thickest point of the rib.Notch the bottom of the spar and the top of the ribs so they all interlock.

Hallo von Dresden

Stuart: The paper wing seemed to be ridged, for it material.
So I will not be using a spar.

Jens: Thanks!

Also I will be making a full size flat plate rc version.
This is to
A) further prove the concept
B) there is a indoor flying day a week next wednesday, I want fly something different from every one else

Scrub the flat plate idea, I might aswell make the final wing, the paper one proved enough

I don't know how far you've got with your build, but have you thought about making it in one piece?I've made a few chuck gliders that way.Draw out the full shape on the card/depron,and then draw two separate top halves out from the l/e.These then fold along the l/e and come together at the centre line. You would need to prebend the sheet before adding ribs, and cut the tops slightly oversize.Bit of nifty gluing and you can add washout.

Will 1mm depron bend that much with sanding then?
Thats nice idea, I was planning to do it in 2 pieces. But is it works in 1 then I will make it that way.

Progress report: All foam ribs cut from 2mm foam.

Mike, try the one piece pattern on a sheet of card or paper first.Like I said before, cut the top halves oversize and trim to fit.For the centre rib I'd double or even treble your 2mm stuff,to give you enough surface to fix the top to.
To get the bend, roll the l/e line with a broom handle or similar, followed by something close to the radius of the rib nose.Bit of heat will probably help. You really need the bend to be at least 90* before fixing the ribs.
If you are using UHU POR adhesive just use it as a normal glue rather than a contact
cement. This will give you time to adjust things.
FINALLY,if your not happy going this route use the method you are used to.I would hate to think you'd spoiled your sheet following my suggestions.

Today I made 1/2 the foam wing.
It took 2 hourse and im now ready to make the second half .
Thanks for the idea on a 1 skin building system, I experimented on a small strip of depron first, just to make sure. I have pictures but I will have to upload them tomorrow.
Thanks for the help!

This will find your cog(if you haven't got it already
Have you worked out a launch method?A small keel on the underside will give you something to grip(or even a notch for a catapult)

Catapult you say...
Dont give me ideas!
But I am considering a dolly........

Also thanks for the CG calculator, I had a rough idea but this proved it. It also gave me more of the wings spec's
And as a extra special treat, here are specifications!

Root cord: 135mm
Tip cord: 70mm
Sweep: 90mm
Wing span: 200mm
Wing area: 4.1 dm^2
Wing loading: 6.1g/dm^2 (is that good?)
C.G: 61mm back from root tip
estimated weight: 25g

Any more details wanted?

Anyways here are the photos promised...

Nice work Mike.I should have put this sketch in my previous post;this is how I've made two or three chuck gliders. The whole thing is one piece.
The advantage is a strong centre, though getting a nice joint can be awkward.I used a flexible rule to get the joint line straight.
What sort of radio gear are you using?
Regards Stuart.
