October 20, 2012 Club Fly-In

We had beautiful autumn weather at the club fly-in this morning. Temps were in the mid 40s and winds were calm when we started flying. Temps rose to the low 70s with 5 mph winds in the afternoon. The sky was blue and the leaves were golden. Fall on the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in the Espaņola valley is a choice time to fly.

We had 8 fliers by my count which is a pretty good showing. No crashes (that required repairs). We had a good variety of flying activities with a couple u-control guys, an active aero-towing group, and the usual sport/3D/warbird action.

As you can see in these two photos, the pits were busy and there was no lack of people willing to give advice to the guy with the radio!

Jack's Yak

As usual, Jack was the big dog with his Aeroworks Yak 54. The power. The sound. The size. The money!

Jim's D-Sperber-Junior

Jim's D-Sperber-Junior Decker kit is a gorgeous build. It's elegant, light, and a great flier. He got a tow up with the Senior Telemaster.

Pat's Pietenpol

Pat's new (to him) Pietenpol was a great flier all day. That was the best $20 spent all year.

Ross's Electrified P-51

Ross's newly electrified P-51 had its maiden flight today. It flew like it was on rails. The plan is to prop up a bit for the next flight as the new power plant has plenty of head room.

Russ's PA Katana Mini

Russ's Precision Aerobatics Katana Mini was rebuilt after its last outing and flew well. The golden transparent covering matched the cottonwood leaves. Art checked off on Russ's skills and gave him his solo certificate.

Art's Sukhoi

Art's trusty Sukhoi was in the air again today. Most of Art's stick time was spent piloting the aero-tow plane.

Pat's Senior Telemaster

Pat's Senior Telemaster was the workhorse for the aero-towing duties. Big, powerful and stable, it lifted all gliders. With Art's very capable thumbs on the sticks, it was a pretty sight watching it work. I'm not sure, but from the way it floated back down to the runway I think the wings were filled with helium.

Russ's Bird 3000

Russ's Bird 3000 looked great against the fall blue sky. It was easily towed to altitude with the Senior Telemaster.

Ross's Fraken-glider

Ross' V-tail cutie is made from the parts of 3 other gliders. It's a floater! Art towed it up with the Senior Telemaster.

Jim's Cularis

Jim's Multiplex Cularis looked great with its patriotic paint scheme. It got a tow to thermal hunting height with the Senior Telemaster.

Jim's Thermic Dream

Jim's 3M Thermic Dream needed no help from the tow plane as it has an electric motor. But Russ provided a sufficient shove to help it off.

Marty's Ringmaster

Marty's classic and iconic Ringmaster U-Control graced the skies of northern New Mexico. Marty has no hanger queens in his fleet. He's a fuel'em and fly'em guy, just like it should be!

Russ's Vector 40

Russ's Vector 40 with an OS LA .46 pulling it around the circle was a great flier. It turns out that Russ can even fly a plane without a string attached. But when you watch him in the middle of the circle, you know where his heart is.

Marc's fleet

I'm afraid that once again I have no proof that I had anything in the air. I'll have to rely on the kindness of my fellow fliers to vouch for me. But I had my 41" 3D Hobby Shop Edge 540 and my T-Rex 450 heli in the air doing some light aerobatics.
