Looking for a 3 meter glider Stepping up from a Radian

What would be a good glider to step up to from a Radian, I will still keep and fly the Radian, but would like to try a 3 meter ship. All recommendations are welcome...I fly in middle TN Thermals are small-medium on most days.
Thanks, Eng30

Are you looking for another foamy? Or do you want to try a woody? Glass? Home built, ARF or RTF? How much flying experience do you have?

The more we know about you and your want's/abilities the better the suggestions.

Hi, flying gliders about 2 years... Foamy or woody......can build.....no glass....ARF's or RTF's would be ok.. My main focus is getting a good flying glider.....the Radian was a very good value and flying glider. I also fly a 2 meter Spirit .

You might want to consider the new Mystique 2.9 offering from Horizon. There's a big thread on this bird over in the Electric Sailplane forum:

Do you want RES or ailerons?
I know people who like the J K Thermic, and it's available both ways:

I realize it's only 2.5 meters, but it ought to perform a lot better than your Radian anyway. Has a wide speed range.

If you go over to Skybench.com, there are a bunch of gliders around 3 meters, most of which seem suitable. The Paragon has an excellent reputation as a slow floater.

The Mirage is supposed to be a good flyer and very simple, is at Isthmus Models.

The Ava is a VERY good flyer, and also easy to fly. Floats as well as just about anything, but with more speed range and nice handling. Assuming your budget goes that far. It does have a tendency to break into small pieces if you do something dumb and crash it really hard, where some other gliders might break into medium sized pieces.

Second the AVA.
Have the AVA-E at 51oz AUW and it does very good with small to big thermals.
It is one you will not regret getting, if it fits your requirements.
Have the Paragon and it is a slow floater, mine is a little on the heavy side.
A BOT is not to shabby when built light.

If you're slightly more ambitious, there's always the Bubble Dancer. Even better than an Ava if done right.

Pure or electric?

Thermal or slope.

$200 or $2000?

If a molded FG fuse is out of the picture then you are pretty much restricted to RES wood kits.

Olympic 3 or Skybird would be good choices.

A molded FG fuse is out of the picture, sad to say.....budget is for a total build is 600-750 dollars. Need a Thermal ship. A ciub member just sold a Oly 3 but I missed buying it.
Still scratching my head on the decision......we have a big swap meet Nov. 3 will look there and if I don't find anything I will buy new .

So, do you hate fiberglass fuselages or are you under the miss impression that they are expensive?

Molded FG fuse is not expensive, relative to your budget. So many moderate priced planes come with molded FG fuselages. You simply knocked out a lot of excellent models based on material rather than price.

Since you mentioned an OLY, I presume that a RES glider is an option as you have not specified anything about control surfaces.

So $750 for the build. Does that include the servos, receiver, battery?

Is this an electric glider or a pure glider? You have an e-glider. Should we assume e-glider?

If a FG fuse is OK then we have a LOT of planes to recommend.

I am going to assume an e-glider that can be RES or full house.

Budget:

$750 - $250 for electronics ( I still don't know that that includes ) = $500 I will consider this the working target for the e-glider alone.

Kits:

www.skybench.com

www.mmglidertech.com

Semi Kits - Most of the work is done but you still have to do some building type work

Oculus - a lot of the build is done for you
http://www.mmglidertech.com/oculus.php

Art Hobby - Wide selection in the 2.5 to 3.1M range
http://www.arthobby.com/index.php?pa...ub_category=50

ARFs -

Dragon Fly Strong E - 3.5 meters $650 - pushes your budget but a great value
http://www.soaringusa.com/DragonFly-Strong-E.html

Avia - 2.5M
http://www.icare-rc.com/avia.htm

Albatross - 2.75M -

Albatross - 3M -

Gracia - 3.1M

Mystique 2.9M - New glider - we don't know much about how it thermals yet

That should be enough to get you started, now that we put FG fuselages back into the mix.

Lots of good recommendations and models to choose from, but if you keep going back to the Skybench website, I think you can guess what my recommendation is.....
