Scrap Balsa.....

If you build I'm sure you have one...... You know a big box full of scrap balsa. It isn't really good for anything, but it's WAY to good to throw away.

How big is your box of scrap?

The two halves of a GP .40 Cub box full of both scrap balsa and scrap ply. I always find a use for it in builds; whether adding a detail, or replacing a broken part.

I especially save big pieces of scrap from builds to possibly do a later repair from the same piece of wood (as to keep similar strengths in the repaired piece as the original).

I have the GP fabric cub ARF box full, but I have been building lots of micro stuff which has been slowly eating away at it.

Too funny! Have a small pile next to scroll saw and a Goldberg 'Cub' box of scrap.

I've built dozens of Mountain Models kits and cherish even the scrap wood leftovers. I can't buy wood that good anywhere local. I've built many parts using scraps. I even did a scratch built 75% scale version of the SwitchBack built 100% from Mountain Models scrap wood. Right now I have 3 big boxes of scrap balsa and one of scrap plywood.

I still have balsa from 30 years ago. Some things you just can get rid of. Now with the laser cutter, I have more scraps then I'll EVER use.

Here is my box of scraps. I will never give it up. I can make new parts and most repairs from the stuff in this box.

Here's a conundrum. You can't be a scratch builder without the box of scrap. You can't acquire the box unless you've been a scratch builder for years.

I sort my scrap balsa by stick, sheet an sheet into thin and thick. Makes it much easier to find what I'm looking for. Long stock in a kit box.. short in a more flat box

Believe it or not, One half of an original Bud Nosen Citabria box I built back in the early '80s. Still has a rib pattern for an Aeromaster bike and some other odds and ends that I KNOW I'm gonna need someday...

Two halves of a sig four star 60 box full of scraps. most unusable, but a lot of usable little pieces, and my LHS has a full selection of midwest balsa, so it's no issue for right now.

Why, it's the most valuable box of junk we own !
I almost used a piece of scrap the other day,but I thought I'd better save it,in case I need it for something......so I cut a new sheet......sigh.

Hi,

I just got started and afraid I’m already a full-fledged “Hoarder”! Lots of shade and sizes, never know, can't bring myself to trash it, just yet. I think, I may need professional help in a couple of years
