Getting the uc and support struts roughed out was a high hurdle for me. Didn't know how it was to be done when the project began. Should be all downhill from here!

I've hit the mid-project doldrums.... fantasizing about the next build, a WWI project.
Ahhh...... I've laid out the plans for the left wing, have some ribs to cut.

Well, it wouldn't be a fun hobby if there weren't a slug of projects worth dreaming about. On the other hand, you are well along with the NYP yet still have some enjoyable building ahead. You did a great job with the landing gear struts. It seems nearly all of the personality of this plane happens at the front end and getting the gear right is a hurdle. The dummy engine and turned finish for the cowl are pure cosmetics but the landing gear has a job to do. You'll get back into it. FWIW, I would be surprised if you go past the 5-lb mark. While there are a lot of pieces, none are very big. Even at 5 pounds though, you will have a modest wing loading. I can't think of a good reason to go more than 350 watts on this model. You won't need it and having more only means carrying more weight. Not that this design wasn't about carrying weight...

Having the power 25 means a little more weight, however, I really like swinging a big prop at low rpm. The sound of a big fan on "low" as it flies by under my nose...

No question, a big prop is key, but that can be done with a low Kv setup. Don't be afraid to do some testing with one cell less than you might normally spec. Years ago Jim Collin out in Ca did some fantastic large scale electrics using monster props and about half the recommended cell counts.

Sounds interesting... I have the Low KV version of the power 25, swinging a 14 " prop, planning to use 3S.
I did some experimenting with the little DV Albatros. A park 450. 3S 850 mah, and a 10" prop. She'd pull a wide loop on that set up. Very Aerobatic. With 2S 850 and 11" prop, she flew more scale like. The motor warmed more with 2S, it needed more throttle. An ounce less AUW too, but a passer by wouldn't know the difference. I usually use 3S with that model, I have 2 of them, and I like having the extra juice. The dynamics must be all together different on large scale models.

Gear placement is with the datum of the fuselage LEVEL.

Found a pic from the EAA Spirit when it was at Detroit City Airport in 1977....

I've not seen a pic of the original with the gear splayed out like that. Must be an intentional deviation from the original plans, like the minimal dihedral.

Pictures of the original SoSL clearly show zero dihedral. If fact the gear and strut geometry often makes it look like there is anhedral.

Wasn't an EAA replica lost due to a gear strut failure?

All I know is that the replica pic shot from the front shows obvious slight dihedral, somehow maybe after they put the struts on? It appears there are several replicas out there, EAA made two. Specs are different on each one....span, length, etc. It's possible they tried different dihedral. This article says a ryan NYP Replica is a nightmare to fly: http://www.charleslindbergh.com/plane/spirit.asp
Gear, I dont know. Maybe differnt geometry,maybe weight?

Nice work on the motor and cowl. I would suggest light glass on the outside of the cowl too.
