The battery hatch was traced onto heavy card stock, a template was made. Then taped to the backside of the aluminum skin. It was then easy to cut an accurate copy of the template out of the aluminum.

Standing off, the little imperfections aren't noticeable...

It's a fine fiddly business.

Makes me want to build something with machined aluminum on it. So nice.

Thanks Robert, in my imagination, the aluminum was going to look nicer. For better or worse, this is how she's gonna look.

This has been such an enjoyable build.... I've been thinking I'd like to build an NYP sometime.
Thanks for sharing it.

Lessee, there's a Tritle NYP somewhere in my stash. Think I'll try dulling and tooling chrome Monokote before applying it to the nose etc., when I get a roun toit. Gotta make a Lindberg for it. If it looks more like Jimmy Stewart, good enough.

A pilot is lost in that enclosed cabin..... his profile aft the windows. I still like the idea of a stand up figure on the flight line.
Haven't made moves in that direction though....

If you watch the movie and/or the documentary of the trans Atlantic flight, they show Lindy leaning over and sticking his head out of the window now and then to observe outside conditions. The pilot could always be put in that observation position. Would make for a more dynamic display seeing the pilot with goggles down and loose leather helmet straps flapping in the wind.

I like the idea of him sticking his head out the window especially with his helmet straps flapping.....a static figure would look great too.

Head out the window is a good idea. What is the title of the documentary? I've not seen that.

Produced by National Geographic. It's pretty good.

Thanks Larry, for posting the Lindberg documentary, it was awesome!

The top section of skin will have to go on after the finished wing is mounted. The way the aluminum curls up to meet the leading edge can't be left to chance.
