But it does no good to discredit a WWII legend to support your dislike of what paint scheme the manufacturer chose.
I found it interesting that Don Blakeslee kicked Gentile out, but let other guys like Hofer get away with the same antics. Maybe Blakeslee didn't like Gentile? And how is it I am digging up dirt? Isn't that what historians call work. Yes, his record stands. Ace with a hidden blemish.

Maybe Blakeslee didn't like Gentile, or he felt threatened. It doesn't matter and its history now.
I choose to celebrate and remember these aviators in a positive light.
....not as blemished Aces.

What historians try to do is eliminate opinion and not to take a story at face value unless it was from an original source and can be verified....ie fact.

The facts are the Gentile cracked up his plane and Blakeslee uttered something to the effect of "that guy" or "Gentile" will never fly for this unit again.

What if anything else behind the scenes is pure speculation. Personally I like the Shangrila scheme so I guess I'm in luck. If I did not like it, i would just change it.

Did this Hofer and the other guys actually crash their planes doing these same antics??

No Hofer did not prange a plane until his death. But he did do a victory roll at low altitude with most of his rudder shot off. The ground crews couldn't believe it. He also took his dog flying at least once on a training mission and hid down to make it look like Duke his dog was at the controls. He generally never followed procedures and would often lone wolf by himself which was really frowned on. The difference is I think everybody liked Hofer. Gentile was made fun of at least once when he radioed that he was "being clobbered" and needed help. The squadron even made up a song making fun of him for that. Draw your own conclusions.

One historically correct fact is that the Blue noses of the 486th flew missions together with the 4th. Including the Russian Shuttle. These two models Dallas Darling and Shangra La flown together would be accurate.

Actually "Dallas Darling" was in the 328th FS which did not fly the shuttle missions. The 486th had the squadron code "PZ".
