Hmmm! Maybe it's not such a great idea after all. Mind you, If I found away, and I could make them get away as cleanly as the F3K's do without adding to much drag in the process. It could be a good idea?

I have a feeling weight distrubution has alot to do with it. F3K models are so light and dont have a great big motor up in the nose. Something to do with circular motion and angular momentum.

Now i think about it an F5D model will probably need ALOT more fin area to get away cleanly after a discus lauch... Probably not worth the extra drag?

Totally different behavior for F5D plane ,for many many reasons.
I will mention just one- all F5D planes have about 3 times smaller vertical tail then regular DLG plane which makes huge difference in stability of the frame on launch.
Otherwords,instead of going straight after leaving Your hand,plane spins horizontally .
....but it brings more spice to whole flying event

Another pretty important value in this consideration is the inertia of the plane. With the gear drive in it, it's much higher and would need an even bigger vertical tail or lever than a DLG.

Interesting idea. In my limited discus experience, a rudder and yaw gyro made things very safe and easy for learning the ins and outs. With those two elements, and maybe a longer tail moment, perhaps you could get the result you are looking for, without having to go big on the vert fin surface. Looking forward to seeing the results of your experience. It would surely have the potentential to revolutionize F5D and maybe B as well.

Maybe if you had a peg mounted between the wingtip and the fuse somehow, to lessen the rotation of the airframe at release... not sure how you'd actually get hold of it though!

Maybe a super streamlined peg coming out of the bottom of the wing, at half span, that you hold onto with your index finger...
