Wheel Making 2"

Sure I did not see your post or I would have responded sooner.

The wheels were made Using PVC pipe then grooved the rim for the tire.

Wrapping paper around the PVC rim gave the exact circumference, then divided into equal sections for the spoke holes

The hubs were made from brass tube and washers
Spokes - Heavy Carpet Thread Ca soaked
Tires were made using round window weatherstripping abit over sized for that scale, so I tried some "craft foam sheets" and laminated them and sliced off a strip and glued it to form the tires.

The foam craft sheet tire was spun and sanded , taking the square corners off.

Cheep ! and they look OK too

Painted and dirtied up a little.

I should have used Grey craft foam for the scale tyres. Next time.

This Plane was just a test for a larger Nieuport 12 I am Building.
Some "issues" were found along the way saving me alot of time.

Nice work. I haven't gotten back into the WW1 aircraft yet, so at the moment I am just collecting information for later. Seen a few show and tell, but the key seems to be using a jig to keep things centered.

Yes you are correct,
Without using an accurate means to hold the central hub, a concentric wheel will not happen.
The "pins and shims" method did not produce acceptable results....a more stable jig was required.
The more stable the tighter the spokes can be laced.

I spun the jig using MDF board on my lathe. and was able to spoke both sides of the wheel without removing it from the fixture. Even using the "better jig" keeping even tension on the spokes was critical. Plucking each spoke evens out the tension before locking in position with CA or Epoxy.

A few years back I stress tested up to 30lbs on a pair of 3" wheels. I used guitar strings for the spokes. I guess it's the "side load" that causes most failures. I haven't figured a way to accurately measure side force loads. But that style of wheel worked well on a 2lb. Plane.

Luckily most WW1 Planes had the shrouds covering the wheels so the spoked effect can be faked.
