Question... do you favor the pulltruded or wrapped cf tube for wing spars?

@EZ: Have not tried the DLG launch yet. I'll try that in Big Sur on a calm day. All the design info is in this thread. Hopefully I've encouraged you to create a spin off.
Hi Kent,

Could you please share some more details how you balance the plane with the lines.
Looks very interesting!

Thanks and regards, Tom

Sure Tom....Just hang the plane from a single point by placing the plane in a doubled over loop of string, then hang a plumb bob from the same point. I orient the wing at what I consider to be normal AOA for best glide.

This creates at standard method of checking the CG that can be recreated and any time after modifications are made to the plane.

I have never checked this method against other CG methods.

Even in light lift this plane is fun.

It was a PIA to fly today with the wind coming in at 45 degress to the slope.........just the way I like it. A challenge.

The Plank 101 got rather bashed up last time out, so I took this opportunity to upgrade the elevons to kevlar hinges to finally end the sand intrusion problem. Tape hinges attract sand.............. Added some fine tuning to the elevon linkage by moving the clevis to the bottom hole on the servo, as all planks should be.

Also re-skin much of the wing with Sig Koverall, which is my favorite covering.

The re-kitted version requires some nose trim which is conveniently provided by a torpedo fishing weight. If only I could get the trim weight to glow and smoke, I'd really be getting somewhere.

As usual, I fly before I paint. As rough as it looks now, it should paint out nicely.

I'm looking for a nose weight like that, but with the CHIRP feature added.

That plank looks suspiciously like a very slightly swept wing. ????

Sand in the hingeline: interesting. We haven't noticed the problem here, and it's pretty sandy between the rocks. Still, live kevlar hinges have got to be the ultimate.

Winds and sand were rippin today. Got a weeks worth of sand in my eyes in a half a second. Had to quit early. Just too much trouble to fly at the beach. Today would have been a good day for ski goggles and BALLAST. Both of which I left in the shop. Got a chance to fly the shadow today.
Plank 101- kevlar hinges (6 min 50 sec)

Like the new kevlar hinges and finer elevator control. I bent the 2/56 threaded rod linkages today several times. Will have to upgrade to carbon or kevlar.

Yes it is swept a little. This justifies the partial elevons at the tips. Still a plank in my book. When I stuff the nose on landing, there will be a shower of sand over the entire wing. A sand bath landing.

This is the back side of the dune. Winds were higher at the frontside. Looks like laminar flow to me.

Nice! The translucent wings look good, and I found some Koverall in a drawer. That may be all the incentive I need to build your suggested D-tube plus ribs. With some LEDs and optical fiber, we could fly at night. I wonder if optical fiber would make a good spar?

The white stuff blowing around here at the moment melts when it gets in the eyes. That laminar flow behind the dunes would be interesting to DS. What is the vertical dimension?

Maybe 50' tall at the back of the dune. I would have tried to DS this if I had goggles today. Too bad. The wind will be gone in a few hours.
