Mid-Florida/Mid-Winter ALES Contest

Jeff:
The guys aren't talking a lot, but we are expecting a pretty good turnout. Ray Alonzo is coming. We have contestants coming from Tenn, Mass and Louisiana, plus a few of the Buzzards. Hopefully you can get David to come. Kiburas said he would come if the weather is good. On Saturday the forecast is for a high of 75, winds N at 6. Sunday, high of 75, winds NE at 9. Doesn't get much better than that in January.
Look forward to seeing you.
Regards, Don

The Gordon Report

There is no doubt in my mind that this weekend saw the best winter weather I have experienced in 13 years in Florida. It was simply marvelous with high 70's and even into the 80's on Sunday and a gentle breeze of 7 to 8 mph each day. Perfect conditions for any sort of soaring event and with the ALES event planned by Don Grisham you couldn't ask for better.
Don ran the event with military like precision with the erection of a flag and the blast of a horn providing the signal for the start of a 5 minute prep time - the removal of the flag with one minute to go for launch and then the blast of the horn again for the start of a 15 second window to launch our models.
With a 7 minute flight time and the Alt limiters set to 150 m it was fairly clear after round 1 on Saturday that this day would be won with precision landings. Lift was abundant and more than adequate to keep any decent sailplane flying for the prescribed time. Hitting the 50 point max on the landing tape wasn't quite so easy.
To be continued.
