According to my last experience, before trying the first flapping wing fly, it is important to send the ornithopter with fixed wings (without wind if possible), it should glide, at least a bit. If it falls directly, one has to rearrange the parts to change the gravity center, or watch the profile of the wings.

In the ornithopter that has not a tail, a center of gravity becomes considerably back.
Therefore, there is the case that a position of battery becomes in a tail.

Good choice and work Doctor, The weight can be optimized by designing (more slimmer)and CNC-ing instead of printing plastic parts.Also the width of mechanism seems can be reduced and weight of the transverse CF plates and steel axle will decrease. POM is maybe the best(for the purpose) material between plastics but 7075 aluminum will work better.
IMO at least on "Z" shaft it's good ball bearings to be used. The other two axes will work satisfactory on sliding bushings (the speed is low and the motion isn't fully rotational ) .Teflon is the plastic with the lowest coefficient of friction between commercially available plastics and it's used most frequently for manufacturing of bearing bushings.

What is the sense ? The wing movement is only flapping.

The design of your first prototype looks good. After testing it, I am shore you can reduse the weight. What flapping frequesy are you using?

I do not yet know flapping frequesy.
I will know it when wings are finished and I fly the ornithopter.

The Wiggle Drive is made for fast flapping. Smaller wings can be used.
