.dxf to .dat file

is there any free programs or easy way to do this? I am trying to help a friend out, so he can cut me some cores.

he has Mach 1 and mach 3 i guess but that does not do it.

thanks, Doug

I don't think you want a .dat file. The .dat format is not standardized.
What you really need is the gcode file. Often listed as a .nc, Mach3 also supports a few other formats.
This code is generated by cam software. There are some demo programs, that are limited. Some of the cheaper software is also very limited in the tool paths available. So what your looking for is software that can generate the gcode, with a postprocessor for Mach3, and has the type of tool paths you need.
He should have some software, or he would have a hard time using the machine.
If you have trouble getting software, I could generate the gcode for you. Since it is custom for what your doing, and the machine its being used with, it would take many questions to get it done.

For what it looks like your wanting to do, this is about the best I've come up with that has a reasonable price tag to it (FREE!) http://pycam.sourceforge.net/ it will generate your tool path for roughing, semi-finish and finish as well as gravure, though you won't probably need that for CNCing (wing?) cores. Read over the link and see if it fits with what your wanting to do.

In addition to Adam's post above, I've also found this useful for DAT conversion. http://gm.cnc.free.fr/en/index.html

Scroll down to Profscan.

Another approach to importing ASCII XY coordinates into CAD is to import them as a "point cloud" in your CAD program. Tom Siler posted this as part of a Rhino tutorial a year or better ago. It seems CAD programs have different terminology, but it's the same process. I think ViaCAD Pro it's imported under a spline menu, even though it's not a spline and rather line segments. I wish I had documented the process to add to the collection, but I did not and fiddled with DAT files a lot to get things to work with Anker's Foamcutter software. As mentioned above, not all DAT formats are the same.
