Build Log

Lst 1180

Looking to scratch build a 1/96 r/c of the USS Manitowoc lst1180 I need to find some drawings or blueprints of this class of ship. I spent 4 years aboard her during the 80s I have plenty of photos for the detail work. I been hunting the net with no luck so far

They must be available somewhere since there is a 1:700 kit available plus a larger 1:72 HMAS Manoora (ex USS Fairfax County) build underway.

You might try contacting JAG who offers the 1:700 scale resin kit.

BAD used to offer a semi scale model of this class that has been built by some fellers back on th east coast. Not sure if this kit is available any where yet.

Free is great when you can get it... but don't let that be the decider.
A few points here:
1. The cost of even the best plans are nothing compared to what you will invest in time and money in this project.
2. Your ship is not listed in the linked site... no luck there!
3. The G/A plans available there and at Floating Drydock are quite useful, but do not include the hull lines.

Is that a show-stopper? Maybe not.
The hull lines are required to make an accurate model... but you can get pretty close by eye, by using the 2-view outline from the G/A's, knowledge of what the hull should look like, and perhaps even by scaling/stretching hull lines from a similar cargo ship (for example) that you can find lines for.
An LST hull, I imagine, is pretty much a box with a pointy end and a round end...

Oh, and have you built any RC ships before? If not, you'll do well to research the process a little... there are several books out there that will give you a lot more info than what most of us are willing to type up in forum posts... for example:
Scale Model Warships

Also, drop in at http://wmunderway.8m.com/home/home.htm... see the how-to's and the very useful forum there... they specialize in warship modeling.

I started with a newport 12 m r/c take over build. I just got the boat back into the water after long time storage when my son saw the bow of it in the shed one day. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1685085 after digging in boxes for r/c stuff
I found my old photos when I was In( 81-84) I got the r/c itch
This would be my first true build (keel up). I saw the bad kit then thought I could try this my self. I got the time and a lot of photos of the old girl. just looking for the starting point blue prints or deck lines.
I have been going through the postings and gathering info on the how to (some pretty good stuff out there) that’s part of the plan of the 1/96 scale (I like big toys) and found scale “bolt on stuff” to trim it out
Great picks of the gator freighter tghsmith have you been on the beach with it ?

Its not mine, belongs to one of the Rockymount NC folks.. ps the big fleet operations weekend is less than a month away. Oct 12,13, 14. the fleet will be gathering.. have never built A BaD kit,, but lacking good hull lines it might be a quick jumpstart(they do incude most of the fittings and running hardware..)

there are plans for the newport on evilbey, they do look a little better than the normal products.. 47'' inch sheet, do have hull stations and several deck views, I wouldn't use them to make a master for a mold, but a one off model for myself could be done with these..

liljimmy thank you for reminding me about HNSA. I got an inquiry on our club website for somebody looking for info on USS Ely PCE 880. I have since passed that site on to him. See how this works. You helped another forum member without even trying.

You do realize that if you build the USS Manitowoc you will be REQUIRED to bring it to Manitowoc in May for the Midwest Model Ship Contest & Display.
