To trail, or not to trail....edge........

Hey Gents, not to shock the h e doublesticks out of you, but I have been doing some work on my 190 wing. The trailing edge is not quite as sharp as usuall. I will post some photo's this evening when I het home. How can I build it up/out, and make it a goor fix?? Carbon rod then sanding it to an edge? Enquiring minds.

That will be my topic, and hands on repair/fix discussion for the meetin in October. Hope too see you all there.

January is around the corner, IMS show?? New photo's for the booth? Are we even doing it?

Any other topics, keep your thinkoing caps on.

Anyone in the club want the Lancair fuse and new cores, let me know, if not, it will be going in the RCGroups classified this weekend.

Doogie

Rick, I will call you this evening around 9:00 p.m.

So, anyone out there, rebels or not, ( ie Target ) have any ideas on my trailing edge issues???? The wing has a 16" chord, 70" ws, and it is a 374 foil I believe. Thanks for any thoughts.

Doug-
Carbon or even a hardwood should work I should think. I assume you would then glass over it to get it covered.
Do you need any materials?

What happened to the lancair? Looked like it was making progress. Can we gang up on it during the next meet and get it chuckable? Carl helped me before the last meeting and made good progress.

I was working on repairing planes this week( should have cleaned the garage instead...).

Hope to have plane for the fest. More than one so I can crash mor often.

Doug,

A 1/8" trailing edge on a wing that size is fine. It's not a high speed plane so don't worry about it. If you are, ... just put a small piece 1/8 x 3.16 piece of basswood or even balsa, but don't make it a knife edge. Don't worry about glassing it either, just tack it on with a few drops of CA and then put a small amount of west systems on it. It will seep in to the grain and the gap.

Glassing it would be overkill. Besides, it's the trailing edge of the wing, ... If you hit it, ... you'll have bigger fish to fry than your trailing edge.

In very simple terms (and not completely technically correct), a sharp trailing edge wants the air from the top surface and the air from the bottom surface to meet at conflicting angles. This does not happen in real life, so you find the air separating from the surfaces before it reaches the trailing edge. This separation is not terribly stable and can cause some fluctuations in the flow that results in heavy, but variable control forces. By cutting the trailing edge flat (blunt), you create a pocket of "dead" air behind that allows a place for the two flows to join together without separating form the upper or lower surface. The blunt trailing edge is also easier to build, structurally stronger, and less prone to damage.

Um, ... That would have the same effect as a 1974 Pinto trying to stop a Freight Train.

I know I have been out of the loop for quite a while guys. I wanted you to know that I dont have a way to tow the porta pots anymore in plenty of time to find someone that has a truck with a hitch before the fest.

attached is the contact info for the people we have always rented the porta pots from. when things calm down with my Lyme and work I will hopefully get back to flying and building. I do miss it quite a bit.

Dave
