What happens when an ESC goes bad?

Just kind of curious more then anything. When an ESC burns up what happens? Does it just cut the power to the motor or does everything shut off meaning servos and receiver?

I have seen them do everything from, wide open throttle, motor just quites, everthing quits, to intermittent motor...just hard to say. I have even seen them take out the receiver and short the battery.

Everyone knows the secret to electronics is the smoke packed inside. Once that factory installed smoke leaks out it will never work again!!

Thanks for the help guys.
