DX5e trainer port protocol

Can somebody tell me what protocol Spektrum DX5e uses on its trainer port? I'm about buying one but first I have to be sure it is using serial PPM or some other documented protocol so I can make a USB convertor or use it in some microcontroller projects.

It's the standard PPM trainer system that has been in use for decades in JR and other Spektrum transmitters.
