Ivan Pettigrew Short Solent - Finaly......

Hi all.

Many years back, i saw the thread titled "Ivan Pettigrew Planes - Build Threads and Videos" and fall in love with huge but light water planes with low cost motor. I ordered a few plan including Short Solent. But when I opened the plan I realized that it is toooo huge to build on my 35"x12" working desk.
I am not sure what was happened to me but I suddenly have started to build Short Solent 7 weeks ago. Now wing is almost completed and started assembly of fuse today.

Here is some pictures so far.

Please be noted that my building is not so nice as other people did.

I did the same. Readiness is needed to start building.
I have decided it when I went to the lake nearby and saw people flying plane.

I have been watching your "Peter Rake Heinkel" thread and waiting for the kit being released.

What a beautiful lake! It reminds me very much of New Zealand (and British Columbia, too).

Nature of Canada is much more maleficent and beautiful, I think. In here everything is small scale.

haha good one..

However the Solent employed British engines.

The Bristol Hercules.

Always fun to watch and 'Ivan build' esp a flying boat.

I haven't check current yet. It is about 250w/motor. Total will be 1kw. This is first time for me to build flying boat and do not know how much power is required for her to take off from water surface. I used ....

Turnigy Park480 Brushless Outrunner 1020kv x 4
Turnigy TAE-45A ESC x 4
Lipo is 3S but capacity is not decided yet. (2 Lipos, one for each side.)
And heavy silicon code is used to hook up ESC to Lipo.

I know it go against Ivan's design concept. But I couldn't find suitable blushed motor and gear down set easily.

Anyway, I will post drawing current later.

The lake I am going to fly her is surrounded by mountain and a bit more windy then flat land where I always fly my planes. I afraid of influence of wind to a big but right weight plane. I am just a worrywart. I tend to choose bigger one always.....
I guess smaller motor like yours is enough judging from the movie how nice Ivan's Solent flys gracefully with brushed and geared motor. 4 motors need 4 ESCs. ESCs have to be installed close to motors. And cable from ESC to Lipo needs to be relatively long. That made wing heavy, 1.8kg(4.0Pounds).

Nice to see another Ivan build underway. I suggest you alert Lukez to your thread if you haven't done so already. As you know, there are a number of Solent builders out there, so plenty of help on hand, should you need it.

Thank you Trevor.

Luke gave me an advised to start a new thread so that he can put a link to his thread when I posted a reply to Matt's thread just to show another Solent building is going on in far east. I hope he has a chance to notice this thread. (^_^

Some more progress...
Wondering how to cover rear half of fuse where has sexy curve.
