EP 1 outboard question

I was over at Chuck Steffen's today and a question came up. He is building a 60's vintage cabin cruiser (think 20 foot Cruisers or Thompson) with twin outboards. He is using two EP 1 units. Has anybody ran a EP 1 backwards full time? He will have to run one backwards to have counter rotation. I was wondering if there is a pitfall to doing it?

I would say that I donít think you would have any problems running the motor in reverse. From what I can tell it is running a zero time 550 size motor which will run both ways at the same rpmís.

Personally I would not bother with counter-rotation with two props so close together.

That said, based on my experience with my EP-1, and having disassembled it, I see no reason why it could not be run in reverse full time.

The gears are straight-cut, no helical issues to deal with. They shouldn't be bothered by running backwards.
