Lipo Dangers

First of all; Happy Birthday Carlos!

Secondly:
I have had a bad experience with an ETEC 2S 1200 pack. I started charging it on the Hobbico Quick Field Charger at 1 Amp. I had my back turned as I was sitting at my computer, and I heard snapping and crackling and when I turned around to the source of the sound, the battery pack was expanded to the point it looked like an inflated balloon. No smoke, and I wasn't anxious to see any either. I freaked and immediately disconnected it and took it out side and winged it into a big lake.
Okay, so that was really stupid, and I'm sorry that I did that. But it is a lot harder to catch a lake on fire than an apartment building with 12 families.

I also had another ETEC develop a lump the size of a pea near the end of the pack. The lump just appeared on it's own while at rest. It has not grown any larger. But then I'm not using it either.
Time to get rid of that pack, so if anyone wants to use it to say do a demonstration/video of a shorted LiPo, you can have it.

This is also why I keep my batteries is an insulated steel box.

Carlos, was the battery in the pictures an ETEC ?

Just from my experience, I know I won't ever purchase anymore ETECs.

I have not had any problems with the Thunder Powers or Kokams.

Thank Jim (P47)! Strange Things are just happening during my birthday

Yes, it has a black plastic cover (B-P-P.COM) and I am sure it's an ETEC 1200 (2S1P). I would have done the same Jim! I would throw it out in a heart beat. It was really was scary at the field today with that HISS of the battery going off like a ROCKET and all that SMOKE, YUCK!

For a neat and short VIDEO of the Battery burning then, go to:

Sorry, I don't think I'll be going to HD this coming weekend as I want to get familiar with 2 planes that require a paved runway.

I will PM you as the weekend draws closer.

Repairs using FOAM meat trays!

Gang,

Wow! The most I've have spent on repairs to a FOAMIE but, it turned out really nice and replaced the horizontal stab using FOAM meat trays.

Here's a couple of pic's!

Left side. The vertical stab came from my retired GWS J3 Cub.

Close up of the underside of the horizontal stab. Yes, I actually used the paper hinges since I used the light weight balsa to re-enforce the two piece stab!
