$15 Hakko 936 soldering station clone (In Stock as of April 24)
This thing is a great deal. It might be a clone but a really good one. Reviews on HK are great and I bought 2 of these. I've been using one for 7 years now and it heats up in less than 20 seconds and has no flaws that I can tell of.
USA warehouse $19 Global Warehouse $19 You can get replacement tips on ebay by searching for hakko 936. You NEED to get at least 1 extra tip since the stock one is pretty small and not good for soldering bigger stuff. These usually go out of stock pretty fast. Quote:

I had a Weller station for over 15 years when it finally decided to break. I looked around and got a Hakko FX888 which is miles ahead of the Weller. Had I seen this bargain, I would have jumped on it....great find.

Go to ebay and search for hakko 936. And yes, you will be able to solder virtually anything with this if you got the skills. |

Yep - With this baby on the way I went to Ebay and picked up four different size tips for $1.80 each with free shipping. While I was at it I picked up 10 grams of Flux paste that will help flow the solder of these heavy multi-strans wires for battery connections. ($1.49 with free shipping.) Now with my $26 dollar multi temp iron and all the extras I have still only spent 35 bucks.

All I did was do a search for " hakko 936 " like our friend told us to do and I found lots of tips but one guy had many sizes all with free shipping. I do not know how this seller does shipping but one hour after I ordered the tips I got a notice on my phone that all four tips have shipped already. I can smell that solder smoldering already. Bring on them connectors.

A good soldering iron or station has the the power (wattage) to be able to heat up the surfaces that are being soldered in a short time which prevents the components or materials adjacent to the solder joint from heating up and either being damaged or destroyed. You only want to get the heat into the area that is being soldered; not the entire area around the joint! Believe me, when your iron doesn't have enough oompf behind it you end up melting things like the plastic housing of Deans type connectors, the insulation near the solder joint, etc because the iron can not generate the heat faster than the surrounding components absorb it. Also being able to control and maintain the temperature is very important which is closely linked with being able to supply and maintain the wattage necessary.
Another thing to mention that is just as important is using the right tips and that the tips make a good thermal (transfer) contact with the iron base or heating element. Mike |
