Yup. That one is very cool. Those guns on the nose look like the Browning 50 Cal's we had on my ship when I was in the Navy years ago. I bet Carlski would hook you up with one of his Pratt and Whitney engines for the cowl. So when you gonna' start building, Jim?

let's FLY!
JimZinVT's Avatar
Hmmm....I'm tempted! But I've only worked with foam and New Stuff so far, have limited slope experience, and no local slopes that would support the kind of PSS birds you guys build and fly. Some day though. I lurk in most of the PSS build threads here, and am following your and Dutchy's current design threads, hoping to learn mold-making and fuse layup techniques

I'm filing this one in my already overstuffed "to do" file

MMMmm... looks Russian - wing loading might be a bit high

Those Ruskies sure came up with some weird stuff. I have looked sideways at the Bartini VVA-14 a few times - maybe one day.

In the short term, I am gathering bits for a 1.7m T-33 and a 2m M-55.

How about this beastie - fortunately sanity prevailed and it was abandoned.

Interesting concept with the winglets back then compared to Boeing's recent thinking.

Oh yeah - I have always had a soft spot for the Pondy. I have seen a few bods talking about them (even as PSSers) but don't recall seeing a finished product. Maybe not enough wing area for a scale PSS ship, but it could be tweaked a bit.
If we wait long enough HobbyKing will probably come out with one.

Yep, something like that. I recall they generated 1000hp each with dual turbochargers. Cooling was poor and there was a mad rush once the Racer landed to cool the enigines.

From what I've read, they ferried it running on avgas, then flushed the system and raced on methanol.

And yes, those were the same V-6s used in the Nissan GTP car from that era.

Oh yeah the E555 is a beautiful concept. I have thought about it several times - maybe a bit draggy for a PSS ship??
This guy is my complete hero. He not only made a turbine E555 from scratch, but assembled all six engines from kits. The vid below is the maiden flight, so no outragious aerobatics.

I am currently bashing an X-8 into some sort of Luft '46 ship.
