I saw one of these flying about fifteen years ago at the local club, powered by a couple of two strokes. I remember it went well and the builder said it was the nicest twin he'd ever flown, quite manageable one one engine - Not, of course, that an engine out should happen to you with outrunners. I look forward to watching this one come together, I'm sure it'll be yet another masterpiece!

Good to hear it should fly well Pete. Masterpiece? it's always something to aim for but there are quite a few firsts for me in this build so much new ground!
Steve - I wasn't thinking of a zwilling, but an alternative nose (F version) is a snap-on alternative!

Hey Pat:

Great choice of model. I built one about 8 years ago from Tom Hunt's plans. I can tell you that it is a great flyer with those big fat wings and that it always gets a lot of attention. I am looking forward to following your progress and I am sure that this will be a winner.

Thanks Alex - I had read through your build previously. (including the clash of power calculating egos ) I am very glad that the electric power scene has become much more predictable today
This bird is much bigger and designed for twin .25s so I stll have some redesigning to do - battery placement etc. Hopefully my trials and tribulations will be fewer than yours!

Finished Tom Hunt's He-111 about a month age. She is weighing in at a 'svelt' 76 ounces with battery and 58 without battery (2400mah Nicad). I ended up using a 2 liter bottle and a bubble gun machine top for the nose. The camo was lustercote painted on monokote. The gear are fixed. All of the riging is for scale appearance.

Thanks for all the links! - I have already done a fair bit of research and your photos were noted on rcgroups As noted earlier, this design is about 19" greater in span than Tom's plan and has additional complextity to go with it. No Coke bottle noses unfortunately - unless they make them 6" diameter I also have several card model versions - they almost convinced me to make a Depron version - still tempting down the track!
You are obviously an He111 enthusiast!

I doubt Peter Rake would be convinced to design a 2 engined model let alone a WW2 machine with retracts But then again........

Finny Business....

Because it was the next simplest subassembly, the fin/rudder/trimtab was next.

Like the tailplane/elevators to be done next, the vertical bits are built in two halves. They are also sheeted while pinned down flat on the board - much easier with a flat side! Blocks are built into the parts to support two Robart hinge-point hinges. These are invisible when finished as the fin skin extends past the rudder-post forming a channel for the rudder LE. 1mm sheet was used for skinning to save a gram or two of weight over 1/16". The trim tab is separate but non-functional
Rudder post and fin LE extend down into the fuselage and will be secured later.

The tailplane/elevator is built the same way but much more complex. Both tail sections are quite thick - around 3/4" The horizontal parts are being cut now - lots....

The horizontal bits are mostly done with the exception of the hinges. The original design uses some dismantled hinge-point style hinges but the modern versions are a bit different so I'll visit the LHS tomorrow and have a look. The scale type hniges are in cutouts in the elevators so the elevator is balanced (LE extends upward when the TE goes down). A U-link has to be embedded between the elevator upper and lower halves so am still working out a jig to get it aligned!

A very useful method of holding fragile stuff (like wings and tail frames) when sanding is a sheet of 120 grade sandpaper stuck to the bench with double-sided tape. Just a light downward pressure holds a frame in place while sanding etc....

A potential delay in this project arrived today in the form of yet another Peter Rake kit. I have worn out my Funtana and want a sturdy mildly aerobatic machine which is scale and Pete suggested a ............... build thread soon when I get some bits together Thanks for the box Charlie!

Been in a "spanish" He 111. Merlin powered :-) Believe it's crashed since?
It was actually a surprisingly small aircraft.
Basic memorable impression was of an odd /goofy design.. far smaller than I had ever imagined.
Clearly from the transition of the golden age to 'moderne'.
Simply cannot image being in it as a "bomber' on a run... with it's dozen wee bombs. Pee-shooter machine guns, lumbering /slow/ flight, fish bowl cockpit... etc. Might just as well of painted them with target rings... instead of camo.
Looks to be an interesting project though.
