E-Oculus from the Mfg

I have been asked to convert the RES Oculus to a E-fuse. So here it is! I will be showing the step by step of how I will be putting mine together. This will be a E-fuse added to a already built wing and tail set from my RES Oculus. Hope to have it ready for the Visalia Fall Fest ALES contest on Oct 5th.

I pulled the fuse out of the mold and trimmed it. It came in at 10.05 oz painted.

Today I picked up the rest on my parts to put in my E-Oculus fuse.

I worked all day Saturday and some Sunday morning to get the E-Oculus ready for the test flight today. Had to redesign almost everything inside. I mounted a HS-85BB servo in the tail upside down head forward. The arm sticks out just a little that I put a clear fairing over it. The link is short and clean setup. Used some E-6000 glue to hold the wires in place in the tail boom. Under the I put a peace of 1/8" ply for a servo & RX mount. The elevator servo is a HS-5085MG. Had to lay it on it's side to place the push rod in line on the side of the fuse. Didn't want to add a binding spot in the push rod. The RX is a AR9300. I need to drill some holes to run the antenna out of the fuse. I found a 45mm spinner to use on this fuse so that I can mount the Hacker motor inside. Cutting the fuse back to fit the spinner was a job all of it's own. The ply motor mount is sanded round to make the fuse fit the shape of the spinner. It is so tight that I had to glue the wires to the top of the fuse. After getting everything glued in and were I wanted it the time came to balance it. Set up the CG stand this morning and thinking that the battery would be how I was going to move the CG around. It was not even close to where I thought would be. It was placed just behind the motor next to the speed control. OK it fits there.

After all that made it to the flying field with everything test two or three times. Looked at the radio program of a friends setup and had to make some changes to the elevator comp for launch. With it already to go it just looked to fast to fly. That red fuse makes it look like a rocket. Everyone was waiting for me to test fly it. I wanted to do all the set up test just like on a new model. Rang check, program settings check, motor check, surface check, glide test check. Ready for launch! Now everyone wanted to know what I was waiting now?

Time to MAN UP! It's that time to launch! First flight got a toss and powered up. This thing went for the Moon. With the elevator comp set up not just right I was able to fly it up to the 200 meters with NO problems. The CG and trim was off a little but no big deal!

The second flight was so different changed some trims and setups. This flight was timed and got a cool launch photo. This plane flies just the same as the RES plane just with a little more weight on board.

Now that I have all of my info with this new project I will making the changes on the print and adding some new instructions for the E-Oculus kit. The E-fuse kit is available now.

New ALES plane E-Oculus

Thanks to all of my friends that pushed me to do this project!
Having a blast doing it!

I noticed you are using a 1000 2cell for Rx power. Have you considered
a Castle Creations 10A BEC? Lighter and plenty of power for two servos
and spoilers. Just a thought.

Congratulations! That's a great modification.

I like your bellcrank. What thickness G10 did you use?
