sorry Bart.... i am in error

I believe we both started with a "Solent".... of the Ivan Persuasion

you ended up with an "Empire"

and i ended up with a "Sunderland"

my building board is clear.. my 72" Cub has at long last got its scratchbuilt floats..

my Sunderland... is back on the building board (Dining room table) it doesnt require much to get it finished... plus i have some time off work coming up!

props are the 3 blade gws 8 x 3.5 left and right hand pitch the model sounds fantastic when running and the thrust is off the scale

Ok, and wich motors you have running that ?

Hey David,

I have 880kv motors and i plan to use gws 9x7 3 blade props but they seem hard to get . . .
i now have 9x5 3 blade and measure the amps and thrust.

Not much done today ,

Build the front section of the hull and sanded them to shape.
Made a change to the desing : I made a new part for the cockpit bottom this one
is without notches for the formers to fit in this way it was a better fit. Got some work on the aft of the hull where the tailplanes are mounted on done but first i want to get the bottom hull sheeted.

Cheers,

Bart

Both the Sunderland and the Empire are looking good. Next year is going to be a classic when these planes fly!

what incidence angles have you chosen for main plane and tail plane? and what thrust angle for the motors? and why?

just asking because i have chosen those of the full size which might shock a few on here.. (i have done this before on much larger scratchbuilts too mimick the full size)

@Robert & Mike , thanks , the kind words are realy motivating

@ David , I used the wing profile selig 7055 as ivan and the airfoil outside of the outer nacelles has a leading edge cuff. the angle between the wing and the stab is approx 4degrees .
The motors are inline with the wing. i hope i can get that nose down sit like the real thing had.

Wich airfoil did you use ? the Göttingen like the real sunderland ?

Got the first phase of the bottom sheeting done , t was hard to let the wood follow te curves of the hull formers. I made the wood softer by steaming it. Next is are the 2 sheets behind the step , these are also in 2.5mm balsa so again hard to form. Luckely the rest of the sheeting in done in 1.5mm balsa. Will need some filler on the seams

As picture's say more than words . . . . .

None of this messing around with flatter sections on the hull then Bart - a full scale flying boat for you! Those of us who started with Ivan's models have been brought up on non-scale hull sections (much flatter, to encourage early planing and a stable platform when at rest). It will be very interesting to see how a scale hull performs.

Looking good so far!
