Brakes, SFGs. I often make initial flights without various aerodevices…and then add them incrementally so I can assess the effects on flight performance. Should an aerodevice not be needed….it is just added weight. I test flew the plane as shown this past weekend in the small demo space at the WRAM show. CG is in the middle of the recommended location, 142 mm from the wing leading edge. The demo area was quite turbulent, so I couldn’t really assess trim or CG. Power seems quite good and very easy to fly constant speed. Downline braking was good, even in the small space. I can’t wait to fly this plane in a good indoor space.

For those (in North America) interested in Spies kits (or the V6 Arrow), I generally have them with me at events, or can ship, and they are also available from Fancy Foam and Skip Miller.

Fast and getting faster!
I just put one together a week ago, and flew it for the first time this weekend!! I had brought over 5 planes with me to fly during the day, and spent the day flying the Spies , best flying F3P airframe I have flown yet!!! Smooth, crisp, and tracks near perfect. Now all I need is that fancy dual motor unit and I`ll be all set!

Finally finished! AUW is 106 grams with a Turnigy nano-tech 300mah battery weighing 17 grams.

I will try the flight test (with video) tomorrow!

106 g AUW is good with that battery. You can break the 100 g barrier by using a 180 mAh battery and a carbon prop. Every gram counts!

I have a Spies myself but it is the milled one. Maybe I should try the mylar version as well. Don is going to be present at the Finnish Open F3P in three weeks...

what is the weight difference between the mylar and the milled? Just curious.

Donatas actually answered that question already in post #13. He weighed the airframe parts and got 7.2 grams difference. That was the first prototype production though so that might have changed a bit.

Just before sunrise. Wind was about 2-3 mph. I am never going to be a championship level flyer but I have a lot of fun practicing! This is the old F3P-AP sequence. It is going to take a while to get used to flying a plane this light (106 grams). The old Osiris V2 was 130 grams that 24 grams makes a BIG difference!

I have flown the Spies up until now with out the SFG's on the tips of the ailerons and elevator. I installed them last night a flew today. The verdict is although they add some weight the performance on the 'side' is improved. I am going to keep them on!

you know you have a great wife when she buys you a cool, high tech airplane for your birthday . My Spies probably wont brake ground for a couple months because I will be installing a new control system I have been working on and the contra drive I am machining not to mention the hours spent in meticulous assembly
My only question so far is how do you pronounce "Spies"?

Tried the 'new' Scorpion S-1804-1650KV motor today. It weights 1.5(~) grams less than the Hacker 10-15s. It did not have nearly the power of the Hacker 10-15s. It did not have enough power for the 106 gram Spies.

Just finished Spies number 2. Came out at 97.8 grams with a Turnigy nano-tech 120mAh 2S 25C Lipo Pack and the Scorpion S-1804-1650KV motor. That's as light I can build it (using the stock parts). We will see if the Scorpion can handle 97.8 grams!

That is an excellent weight for the kit Spies. I think that Scorpion should be able to handle it but I recommend getting a better and lighter prop than the 8" GWS.

Based on the kv of that motor, I'd start experimenting with the Glavak SG 9 x 2.8. It is more than 2 grams lighter than the GWS and has more optimal pitch for F3P. With the GWS, the motor might be well outside of the best efficiency.

I had a Spies with AUW of about 92g with the scorpion motor and 2s180mAh batteries. The best prop proposed by Glavaks was their 9x2,5 slim. The power was ok for the whole schedule, so you should be happy with it.

You guys were right at less that 100 grams the Scorpion has enough power and no extra.

What Glavak prop is best for a Hacker A10-15S Motor?
