Saito FG 21 vs. FG 17

Hello all,

i am contemplating a GP Super Skybolt that calls for up to a .91 four stroke.

I like the Saito FG 17 for this plane (gas version of the Saito 100) but I believe the FG 21 would be more useful on other planes down the road. The FG 21 is four ounces heavier and $50 more. Are both engines generally free of problems?

I am not looking for the 3D performannce of an Ultimate Biplane. I want a smooth, mildly areobatic, non 3D biplane.

Anyone have an opinion on flying the GP Super Skybolt with an FG 21 instead of an FG 17?

Thanks for your help.

Four oz is not a lot on a short nosed airplane, in fact you may need it. I would go with the 21 and just put on a large diameter low pitched prop. Something in the 6-8 pitch range. That will keep the speed down and the thrust up.

my issue is thinking about other projects down the road. i dont see how that logic applies after a basic trainer. frankly. it's not even good logic for a basic trainer. (for what a .40 sized engine always cost... for heaven's sake just buy another engine and have *two* planes that fly...). if you like the fg-17 go that route.

GeetarJoe is also spot on about 4oz not being that big of a deal in a short nosed biplane of that size

No substitute for cubic inches.....
My bolt sports a satio 100. dam fine combination. She's not overly powered but isnt a weinie either. Flys nice and scale and smooth with just enough for that little something extra.
Go with the FG21 and you wont be disappointed.
