3D Printed 1/48 scale RAmparts 3000 Tug

I'm working on a 3D printable RAmparts 3000 scale tug and thought you guys might like to see. My printer, a kit built RepRap Mendel Prusa 2, has a print area of 200x200x100mm so I'll have to print it in sections and join with epoxy.

The 3D Hull was created in the free version of DELFTShip and exported into blender to create a manifold model which ensures all faces a connected on all sides. The model was repaired in Netfabb Studio Basic ready for printing. Fixtures, deck and deckhouse will be modelled once I know the hull is printable.

It's a work in progress, so far I've managed to print a scaled down version but 1/48 scale prints all failed so far. These failures are mainly down to printer calibration which I'm working to resolve. I think the bow and stern sections will need to be printed as solid objects but I'm trying to print them as hollow objects. Images and reference attached.

Click here to see the 3D model online. Choose the 'Flash' option for best performance.

I will, of course, update you with my progress. If anyone has come across anything like this before please let me know!

Great work, it is interesting to see a reprap actually producing something rather then
seeing someone produce a reprap printer...

What's the plan for surfacing? Filler? Sand it smooth?

Have you thought about printing frames, a keel, and then sheeting over them?

Good luck with your project.

Congrats on the 10k! There is a method of printing in ABS and brushing or dipping in acetone which smooths the layers out but I'm not sure this would provide a completely smooth finish. People have had good results with wet and dry sanding.

I wanted to print a completed hull to see if it could be done, it kind of defeats the purpose of the printer if there is more post print work than pre-print.
