Did you see the Arduino DUE is going to be out by the end of the month? its got a way to do USB host on the M3 chip they are using! Good stuff!!
Can you post the link to that reference?

Yep, the DUE is a 32-bit device......and I believe it uses a 32bit Cortex-M3 ARM processor, a SAM3U processor from ATMEL running at 96MHz with 256Kb of Flash, 50Kb of Sram, 5 SPI buses, 2 I2C interfaces, 5 UARTS, 16 Analog Inputs at 12Bit resolution and more.

I'll probably get one of those to update my home made Segway.

Check the video in this post on DIYDrones, Massimo mentions it will have two usb ports one will be like it is today (uploading code) and the second is for USB on the go which includes USB Host.

Are you asking why Timer 3 is being used?...............Quite simply to provide timing for various calls to various subs.............and I suppose could easily be reproduced with some code without using a timer if one really wanted to run on other Arduino's...............however, last time I looked I was using more flash mem than is available on the Atmel 328's.

Code:
// *********************** TIMER 3 **************************
ISR(TIMER3_OVF_vect) {
  tick0 = tick0 + 1;                        // update timing tick
  tick1 = tick1 + 1;                        // update timing tick
  tick2 = tick2 + 1;                        // update timing tick
  tick3 = tick3 + 1;                        // update timing tick
  TCNT3 = 155;                              // reset timer cnt to 155 out of 255.........?
  TIFR3 = 0x00;                             // timer3 int flag reg: clear timer overflow flag
}

You can upload the code but the menu's won't work because it needs the stick attached.....via USB.
All you will probably get is the opening display on the LCD.
I'm thinking the PPM output will work albeit everything at default settings since you won't be able to config anything.

Thanks Ian.

I'm thinking of having some pcbs for Usb host shield made at a local EU pcb-fab-house..
Probably one will cost around 5-6 euro + shipping, anyone interested?

How will these differ from the ones you can buy?

They'll be the same, its just that I got a few max3421's lying around and I want a bare pcb so I could make that usb host shield myself..

Google is your friend - http://www.webx.dk/rc/uhf-link3/how2purchase.htm

You can use any Tx system just as long as it conforms to standard Futaba type PPM stream, albeit I have only tested with Thomas's kit.

LCD no display

Hi IanJ,
I'm tring to make may USB RC Joystick just same as your parts with MEGA1280&LCD1602, the function of Tx and stick control are all worked well, but my 1602 LCD have no words display, just have back-lighting on, could you pls help me for this problem? ~~ thanks!

I connected the LCD to arduino MEGA1280 I/O as below:

ARDUINO I/O:-
Dig Pin 2 = LCD D7
Dig Pin 3 = LCD D6
Dig Pin 4 = LCD D5
Dig Pin 5 = LCD D4
Dig Pin 6 = LCD RS
Dig Pin 7 = LCD ENABLE

Hi,

Did you connect up a potentiometer to adjust the LCD contrast?

Here's an example I found on the web:-
