Which is better for lifting?

A EDF or a shrouded prop?

I'm building a hovercraft with wings. I have the folding wing deployment mechanisms working, but am now to the new part - building a hovercraft. Trying to create as little drag as possible, I want to use a front-facing EDF for the lifter, as it will create much less drag than a large prop. I'm disabling the lifter once up in the air, but I don't want a big prop on the front not doing anything when I'm airborne.

So, with that said, what are the thought of guys that actually know what they're doing?
