do you think this is a great deal?

I think it's a great deal! I love mine so much I ordered a spare just to have it. I might mod the second one with ER9X. I also just got a Spektrum DX6i and was surprised how it feels and looks cheaper than the 9x. Not knocking the Spektrum, we know it's a fine radio, but the 9x is a solid radio and I am glad to own it. Rock solid performance and rock bottom price.

i got me one, turnigy 9ch about a year ago. as far as i can tell its good deal. came from h/k. i must have got the up dated one, no problems at all!. i fly a 450 exi mutt. diffrent parts every where. it wsa on back order & took awhile to get it but worth the wait.

The Turnigy might be better built than the DX6i (I've never laid hands on a DX6i), but it was nowhere near the DX7 I used to have. The 9303 I have now just blows it out of the water quality wise...

The 9X reminds me of the 5-AP TX that came with my Stryker C RTF, ok, maybe a little bit better.

I bought a couple because everyone was going on about it and was completely underwhelmed with it. My old Optic 6 feels like a Cadillac compared to the 9X.

Yeah, I know all about the open source firmware and all that, but by the time you ditch the Turnigy 2.4 module and RX for a good system, pony up for the Smartyparts board, plus the shipping costs, it just isn't worth it. That $80 "deal" becomes $250 real quick. At that price, you could get yourself a nice system that actually comes with a manual and some US based support.

much of the total 'end' price depends on what tools you already have. if you already have a programmer that cuts out the smartieparts board.

With that, logic, you're right, its not worth it for the average hobbyist. But its not just about the money. Some people just like to tinker. I have 2 9x's one new in the box to mod, and the other bone stock I am using for several models, and it is a perfectly fine radio bone stock. And that makes it a terrific value. Many of these modders forget that for the average user, stock works just fine.

I have mine modded using the $5 programmer from hk. I am now using open9x firmware and it's so much better than the stock one. with that said I think the 9x is a very good deal.
