SCS Express Intl Ltd ransoming my HK order!

For my last order at Hobby King, I received a mail from "SCS Express Intl Ltd" declaring they have imported my order in the UK and paid for the VAT. They now request me to send them money before they will send it to me.

After googling, I found I'm not the first one to experience this. Most people just pay, I'm apparently the only one who's having second thoughts... I am familiar with paying VAT. It's not the first time, believe me. But I have always had to pay it to Belgian customs, not some Paypal transfer to some Hong Kong guy!
This sound fishy to say the least!

Customs is luck based, some packages are picked to pay VAT, others pass. What SCS does is let us pay VAT for every package. Again, I have no problem paying tax, but it should be to the right person. Furthermore, I have absolutely no guarantee they actually paid it! For all I know they are just sending invoices out to everyone, without actually paying a thing themselves.

I have also contacted HK and they gave me standard answers like "you have to pay VAT, it's not included in the price". I know that!
Attached is my communication with SCS. If they don't release my package by the end of the week, I'll file a paypal complaint and they can ship it right back to where it came from!

By the way, I have to say that in daily life, I'm a nice guy
I just can't keep my cool dealing with those guys...

Why is that interesting? See my post further down for clarification.

Nic I've never heard of this before, but I'm in Aus so who knows. Ask over on the HK forum, they can probably provide some answer.

@KCV6, googling around, it only seems to affect Dutch and Belgian customers.
I was going to try the HK forum, but as contacting their helpdesk didn't really solve anything, I came here hoping to get a more objective answer.

There might be some other dutch or belgian customers on RCG, problem is not many look in vendor talk. Is there a regional section?

Hoppy, Dynamic Model Design Ltd. is a registered part of hextronics (for electronic design). Their CE certification for some of their electronic stuff is through that part of their Business. HK is a conglomerate of various business parts. HobbyKing is just the shop front. (thanks JW saved me looking it up)

Yep and as the managing director it's his name on the CE certificate as well.

Nik, I see the Dutch and Belgian regional forums havn't been that active. All I can suggest is ask about it in the discussion section of the HK forum as there are a couple of members from the region.

We are lucky here in Aus for now. No import taxes or GST. But they are considering bringing them in.

I've always wanted to move to Australia... No import taxes! Time to pack my stuff

I don't really want to double post, but will try to get some fellow Belgians and Dutch guys here.

I would contact the appropriate government agency (Belgian customs) that is supposed to collect the VAT and see what they have to say about the issue. That's who is ultimately in charge of the flow of funds. Customs will know if the VAT has indeed been paid, whether it needs to be paid, or any oher legality involving an issue like this. If you find the VAT has not been paid, then cancel the order and request a refund. I hope you paid via paypal.....

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the links, but like I said, everyone just pays...
I'm that kind of guy that likes to double check the bill when he pays in a restaurant.
As long as they can't show me proof they actually paid that amount of tax for my package, for all I know, it's a scam.

@Joe 1320, luckily I paid with paypal. I'm sure they will be on my side when I explain the situation.
