The Very first test of the new Weight Shifting/Transferring System.

Mollie VTOL Weight Shifting Bench Test (0 min 49 sec)

I have yet to place an order for the servo saver but I figured I could get some bench and hovering testing done.

How many servos do you have on that thing?

there are a total of five servos on this aircraft however the two 9g Flaps servos may or may not be used in the future.

Look what I found at the 99 cent store?

Need to cut them down and apply some black plastic paint.

It was very windy here today however, I did manage to get some testing done with the new weight shifting technique (WST). Recorded videos for analyzing but nothing I consider worth sharing. First test results looks very promising.

Very pleased with the results of this test, the winds were about 7-10 mph. I am still fighting with the YAW on this copter, hopefully I will resolve that with a few more linkage adjustments however, the pitching now seems to be well under control now. I will try adding a few more points in the PID control loop to see what happens. I never worry about the cosmetic appearances of my builds focusing on stability but will need to do lots of clean up to streamline this build, may even opt for a complete rebuild incorporating everything learned so far.

Mollie VTOL Weight Shifting Hover Test (3 min 33 sec)

I think I am going to add a weight shifting device to both, Black and Mini Mollie.

Looks a lot better than your last flight without the weight shift. Must be working!

I really like testing in my back yard on windy days because as the wind drops off the roof and the enclosed area, it creates some very weird vortexes. This is why I opted to proceed with testing today because the previous park test was under similar windy conditions. She handled the wind nicely here. I will return to the park maybe as soon as tomorrow morning.

A little PS FYI: Many of my test videos show my copter hovering close to the ground. There is a method to my madness, I have learned to use the prop wash to find tune the PID/Stability. Sure, once the copter is up about 4-6 feet, it clams down but what I am looking for, is how well the ACC/Gyros will handing disturbance.

The Winds were quite calmer today and the test results reflect this calmness, I am very happy. Now I need to turn my attention to installing the ducts and the transitioning to horizontal flight mode. I started building an enhanced sister ship to serve as backup in the event of an unrepairable crash but that will require some time because of the lack of resources. So I will have to cautiously precede with just the one aircraft.

in North Dakota, at the IARC compition in 2012, i was told the Embry Riddel aeronautic university, tightend the duct diameter from 1/8 inch tip-to-wall, to 1/16 in tip-to-wall. this was for a 6 inch prop i think.

making that change increased prop-power output by 5-8% over the 1/8 confiuration.

I believe the explanation i was givin from their flight leader, was that the closer the tip, the more of the horizontal-tip vortex was tipped downward and vertical, thus becoming a useful contribution to thrust. instead of being wasted electricity.

there is also a wing tip device that does the same thing:
