Steampunk Quad Copter Build

I'm making a new show copter along with my amazing modeler father. After a fair bit of research, we decided to go with a steampunk airship theme. The design will be based on two pictures we liked and felt were most achievable. This first image from Final Fantasy shows the basic idea for propulsion:

Ignore the deck props, we will be skipping those in favor of some elements from this next image:

Specifically, we are going to put a boiler + smokestack arrangement on the deck along with some lines to hold some sun shade "tent" type covering to add detail.

The main hull of the ship is from this model:

This ship is actually a rip off of the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean - in fact this same company has a Black Pearl model that's identical with a different figurehead. Here is someone else's standard hull image in progress to see what it looks like plain:

Here is how the interior hull looks from someone elses build:

The current plan for hardware is this:

HobbyKing v3 KKMulticopter Board in x4 mode
DT-750 Motors (cause I have a ton already)
Turnigy Plush 30 Amp Speed Controllers
APC 10x4.7 SF props

Actually mounting things is going to be tricky. The ship has it's lower hull, then a gun deck, then the main deck. The battery will have to sit above the flight controller and receiver but below the main deck. Both the gun deck and main deck will have to have removable access panels to access components. I really don't want to make it so no parts can be replaced. The biggest problem right now is that it looks like the arm supports for the motors might actually have to be built in-place into the hull. Better not have a bad crash

Anyways, I figure I could get away with posting this as we've already started putting things together. I'll keep this updated as I go as well. Thanks!

-Mike

I think I'm inverted. Maybe.

When it comes to steampunk, you ALWAYS need to have 3+ bags of these lying around.

I have used them to make really neat steampunk-looking control horns and linkages. And for reinforcement. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1673866 . The control linkages are in post 2 I think.

StreamPunk Quadcopter Pig!?!?

Grand Rapids, MI has a huge art contest each year. A couple years ago a friend of mine created a huge steam punk piece. This is Parsifal better know as Steam Pig. At 1:18 in the video you can see a quick shot I did with an original QuadPowered quad and rigid mount GoPro HD.

Steam Pig is cool because he's a MultiRotor flying pig! He has 4 turbine engines. QuadPig!

SteamPunk FTW!

Oh! He is for sale! Let me know if you are interested.

either use wood props, or paint yours to look like wood with brass hub reinforcing on it
sounds awesome!

Thanks for all the kind words. Anyone have a suggestion for some smaller 3-blade props and motors to drive em that I can use? I think the DT750 + 10x4.7 are a bit big in all regards. I'd like the 3-blade props as they are smaller.

They're smaller but they don't give much thrust.
See, for example, this test of GWS 9x5x3 with DT700 motor : showpost.php?p=20828138
225g at mid-throttle and 680g WOT.
I don't think it would be enough for the weight of your flying boat.
10x4.7 are much better.

Ha, thanks Mortimer - that's EXACTLY what I was looking for. Looks like the DT750 + 10x4.7 + Turnigy Plush 30a is where it will stay. Not quite as nice scale looking as it means the motors have to be a bit far from the hull, but we will make it work

Tiny and hard to see, but that's the basic idea with the props. Looks like we will be using .415" carbon fiber tubes for the arms. These are very heavy to be basically unbreakable as they will be a pain in the butt to replace:
