New Sony action cam (Possible AP/FPV use)

http://mobile.theverge.com/2012/6/27...otype-hands-on

Seems to be smaller, lighter and a better shape for a AP plane use.

What do you guys think?

I'm all in favour of the proliferation of these cameras, because its good for us AP'ers, but this one features IS which may be a blessing or a curse, as we've seen with some of their other models. If its EIS and it can be switched off, more the better.

Another thing I don't lilke about it is its shape. The shape of the GoPro makes it easy to use rubber bands to mount it over a gel base on a standard gimbal. The shape of this thing will make that more difficult.

Airplane guys will probably appreciate the more aerodynamic shape. I hope the prioritize on image quality and make it a step better than the bloggie.

It will probably have the same fisheye look all the others have so there will be lots of complaints about it from the AV folks. I personally don' mind it much but there are plenty that will not like it.

It seems to have the general shape of the Contour cameras, but it seems to require a waterproof case for wet conditions. I have a Contour Roam (which is moderately waterproof without requiring a case) and thanks to its shape wearing it on the optional headband is very comfortable and works well, see below. Hopefully the optical quality and price will be very good, side-by-side comparisons with the various Contour models will be interesting.

It would be great if it was 1080p/60fps, no fisheye (which is perhaps what the gopro3 will be).
Here is more info on it:

Price is right...I am kinda digging the 720p 120fps thing, talk about slow mo

Heck at this price they will sell a ton of these...Gopro better start reducing their price, if this thing produces they are in for strong company. Competition is a good thing

Nice review, thanks for that. I almost pulled the trigger on one, then decided on a (reduced price) nex-5n instead, since I already have two gopro's (1), a Contour HD and Drift Stealth.

The lack of a rotating lens like the Contour and Drift are a minor concern to me, because the shape of this camera lends itself to a sideways mount like the Contour. Did you have the stabilization on with this, or can it be turned on/off?

On another note, how do you find keeping the Gator mount steady for video? I have the same mount and it's fine for keeping the camera level for stills, but cavitates waay to much on the tilt axis for video, at least with my Drift Stealth on it.

I love my action cam. I typically use it on my Radian for AV but here is one where I was testing the underwater capabilities.

Fun at the pool - watch in HD! (3 min 15 sec)

I have been using a Sony Bloggie for my video when I need a lighter camera. After getting my Action Cam, I did a quick comparison of the two.
