1:8 scale, Maritime 34', 51" LOA, 20" beam


Sometime ago, I committed to providing constructions details of this scratch built project. They will be in the following sequence:

Boat

The Boat

The 32' version of this boat was fished in Bristol Bay, Alaska. It was powered by a 600hp Lugger, 4-blade 30 x 26 prop, which resulted in a top speed of 21 kts. Fishing weight probably added 750 lbs of net, and 1,800 lbs of crew and provisions, which slowed the boat to a top speed of 17 - 18 knots, with an all-day cruise of 15 - 16 its. At sea trials, it displaced 19,600 lbs. (tare weight plus 100 gallons of fuel. (425 gal capacity). If memory serves, immersion rate was about 1,760 lbs/inch. The actual fish hold was about 300 cu ft, holding 50 lbs of Salmon per cu ft in deck brailers. Largest single delivery was 23,000+ lbs.

This model was built from real boat plans of the 34ft version (not Bristol Bay legal due to length), resulting in 51" x 20".
Electric twin motor unit is MACK Prooducts #2540 (600 size@) with 4:1 gear.
ESC is Astro Flight Reversing, Model 208D, with BEC.
Batteries are two 7.2V, 5,000 mAh, wired in series, fused at 20A.
Prop is Raboesch 3", 4-blade, #177-25.
Shaft is s/s 3/16" with oil lite bearings.
Rudder servo is Hitec HS-985MG, with dual ball bearings and metal gears.
Radio is JR
Paint:
Rust-Oleum, Satin, Midnight Blue
Rust-Oleum, Semi-Gloss, White
Rust-Oleum, Satin, American Accents Stone Grey
Decals:
"Light Navy" color

The Plug


The "Plug" was built from Baltic Birch Plywood, 1/2" keel, 1/4" bulkheads, and 1/8" Basswood planks.

Original idea was to make a mold so we could have a total of 4 hulls, however, so far, this is the only "part".

Sea Trials


The main modification during sea trials was changing the gear from 3:1 to 4:1. Performance stayed about the same with motors running cooler.

I like it. You don't realize just how big it is until you see the batteries and motors swallowed up in that hull.

OOBY Thanks for posting the build photos of your new boat. I was able to see the plug in the finishing stages and knew this was going to be another great build. It looks great in the water, let us know how the mechanical gear is coming along also as you progress. I have been busy helping my friends with their ON30 model RR, preparing for the narrow gauge nationals this fall in Bellevue. When you are in Olympia again and would like to visit it, I can arrange that as I know you had some interest in O scale, I think. Keep up the great work. jerryj98501 in Olympia

ooby- Really nice job on the model. She looks like she can get up and go pretty good by the pictures.

I have a question? Do you think that you could have raised the bulwarks on the forward deck of the plug before making the split mold. That way you could have framed for the front deck right at the top of the fiberglass hull. Any way you look at it the model is going to be great.

It was considered. For somebody more experienced, as this was our first one, the answer is likely, "Yes". My brother and I opted not to, simply because we didn't want any problems removing the part. Interesting to hear from the pros on this site to learn what they would have done.

Gpzy, I'm glad you do. I think that this boat's lines are aesthetically pleasing when compared to most Bristol Bay boats, which are made from aluminum.
