Thanks Brian, and congrats on the Maker Faire success!

I was so impressed by this machine, that I promptly visited your website, and cnczone build thread, in order to check out your other works. All of them exemplary! So yes, I already found the renderings of the rotating nut assembly, I should have reposted here and saved you some trouble as I noticed you had addressed the issue already several times in that thread.

But I was unaware of the smooth-on products. Thanks for posting that as well, looks like one could find unlimited uses for them in the hobby world.

Again, all my respect!

So do you plan to offer these for sale? I will be looking for a cnc router come tax time and i like the looks and design features this one has.

I am checking on costs right now and whether it makes any sense. I am currently thinking about doing a run of 5 machines if the interest could support it.

I will post info here when I know more!

Cutting Videos!!!

I am looking into kit costs... So far so good! I will post as soon as I know more...

I now have everything set back up in the shop... this is the current resting place for the machine. For 5-10 minutes, I considered building an indoor enclosure, luckily common sense prevailed....

Here you can see three of my projects, Platform, MDF3790 and 300ZX TT

I bought a piece of strap steel and drilled holes in it for the insert hold down. I decided to tool black the steel instead of paint. Since this is a chemical reaction that turns the steel black, it is more durable than if I just hit it with a rattle-can.

Start by prepping the steel with a scotch bright soaked in denatured alcohol, then apply the tool black liquid with a scotch bright so that you can assure a nice even finish, leave for a couple minutes and then wash it off with water to stop the chemical reaction. Finish with butcher's paste wax, and you're done. Can also be used on zinc coated parts.

I finally cut my first parts on Monday as I had to work on the weekend. I would have posted this earlier, but I decided to inject a tiny bit of production value into the video since it is the first thing I cut. (alright, technically the 2nd thing as I milled the hold-down holes into the spoil board).

Here is the 3D model, I am making a press mold to make this panelized composition. The panels are sized for a large Fedex box.

First started with a 2D rough pass..

Unfortunately, my phone was out of batteries when I decided to run this. I was also battling the CV settings on the splines. Essentially, all of the tiny moves are almost 180 degrees, so with a stop CV angle of 90 or 89 and a look ahead of 200, it was acting more like exact stop mode. I turned off the CV options, just running full CV smoothed everything out. Anyone have any suggestions for settings I might have over looked for auto CV on/off?

Anyway... On to the video!!! Please excuse the dust, I am working on that...

2D/3D Surfacing on my DIY Platform CNC (2 min 43 sec)

Even though they are shown at the end of the video... Here are the results!

The finished pieces attached to the onion skin...

Here are the two parts nested... I will need to cut three more sets.

Detail of surface... I will be sanding and sealing this surface.

That's it for now!

Cheers,

For the CV problem, could be a slow computer. Or software on the computer slowing it down. Maybe the servo acceleration maps are to slow. Hard to say.

Thank you very much for the comment! I hope to be able to post about the kits this weekend. I am still trying to get my head around everything and hoping a new waterjet company gets back to me with some numbers. I am currently looking at doing a run of five machines. I have a couple people locally interested as well...

BTW- I used to spend a lot of time in Medford, OR and my mom still lives out there! I worked summers at Boise Cascade LVL while I was going to school...

Cheers,

Brian
