Nicad Charging

Hi.

I have a requirment to charge a 23 Cell Nicad Pack 2500mHA.

Using the Cellpro 10XP with 8mA fall backsetting (default) the charger goes to trickle charge after 200mA but the battery is no where near charged.

Version 1.19 firmware.

I have 3 different chargers all doing the same...does anyone have any reason why and how to fix it.

Thanks

Richard.

I'm no 10XP or NiCd expert, but the pack could be full or bad if you have 3 chargers doing this to you. What is the voltage of the pack and have you tried fully discharging it first? Posting pictures of charge voltage, current, and fallback volts may be helpful as well.

Hi Steve

I have tried 3 different battery packs.. all brand new.. all doing the same.

I charged one of the packs on a supernova charges and it worked fine. took about 2500mA to reach fully charged.. the same pack on the XP dropped to trickle after only 200mA.

I would try increasing the fallback voltage. Monitor the pack temp during the charge. If the pack starts to get warm or hot and the charge cycle does not end, the fall back voltage setting is too high.

hi.. not sure how to increase the fall back voltage.. the Pre-Set is only 8mV per cell (23 cell nicad)

is there an option to change it.. Had a look in the settings via the PC..

Hi:

On the Cellpro 10XP, the fallback voltages are fixed at 8mV for NiCd and 5mV for NiMH.

Hi Tim

Have you had any problems charging the Nicad packs..? We have bought 6 chargers because they could handle the 23 Cell count.

Do you have any recommendations.?

Sorry. Didn't realize the 10XP had a fixed value.

Hi:

What charge rate setting are you using?

2 Amps.. tried 2.5 Amp too..

Is there a way to graph the charge on the PC.. I know you can do it with LiPo but when you select Nicad the graphs don't show.

Hi:

It's likely this particular battery is false peaking on the 10XP. Please try raising the charge current to 3.5A and give that a go. Let me know how you make out. The graphing function does work for NiCd, but not all the graphs are applicable. Pack Voltage and current graphs should work. It may be that the charger is kicking out of charge mode before the graphs have a chance to come up?

Hi Tim

A little better.. a new battery took 281mA... The Cells are 1/2 D 2500mHA

The Datasheet says to charge at only 900mA.. I did try but only got 80mA

http://www.master-instruments.com.au...3/ET2500D.html

Is there a way to change the Fall back Voltage or is that a firmware change..?

I still have no trouble using the SuperNova with 8mV per cell.. but on there you enter the cell count.. How does the XP know how many cell there are in the pack..?

Hi:

Currently, fallback voltage is fixed on the CP10XP. Yes, it would require a firmware change to alter this. Let me work with the design engineer and see if there is any chance of supplying a firmware upgrade you might be able to try.

In the CP10XP, the no. of cells is autodetected. It re-adjusts the count as time goes by but eventually "locks in". Generally, even if it does not get the cell count 100% accurate, it is not enough to make much difference on total fallback for a pack.

Let me see what I can come up with. I'll get back to you.

It might be good if you send me an email at tim@fmadirect.com so I can better support you. Forums are not the greatest tool for this type of issue.
