I've had good luck using 220 grit paper or higher on a palm sander or finish sander. You do have to be careful to avoid letting the edge of the sandpaper cut into the foam as you move the sander.

I've had relatively good luck with using drywall sanding sponges - they tend to produce more even results.

The best sanding item I have found, we actually use at work to "polish" aluminum. 3M Scotch-Brite pads. I use the maroon version. No edges to cut into the foam, and makes it super easy to slide in one smooth stroke for a nice even finish. You can buy them in small packs at Lowes or HD. Highly recommend this method for shaping the front of wings since it rolls nicely into rounded corners and then one pass up and down the wing....DONE.

I do a lot of Readi-Board monoblock type designs. and like everyone else has mentioned, just be carefull and be patient with your sanding. I have several different roughness of sanding blocks. I have a 60 grit one to get a lot of foam down for big jobs, and just like wood, start switching to finer and finer blocks once I get the shape I want.
